    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the insight provided by the firm. The firm really invested in ensuring I learnt as much about the firm as possible. This was, for example, through networking sessions such as drinks and workshops. It was also through the interesting work I was involved in. It was this combined appealing insight which allowed me to envisage myself working at the firm long-term.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt very valued by the firm. This became apparent during the assessment day and carried on through the scheme. For example, everyone I met was more than happy to have a chat and answer any questions I had. This may be why I felt like a real member of the firm so early on!

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The support was fantastic. The graduate recruitment team, trainees and partners were all willing to assist and answer any questions. I was also allocated a Trainee Buddy. Having a Buddy meant I had a direct contact point to ask any questions and someone who would even check up on me to ensure I was doing okay!

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I enhanced many skills during my time at the firm, from communication skills when networking with a diverse range of people, to creative thinking when assisting in drafting. Such relevant skills will, naturally, assist me going forwards. For example, I am involved in writing articles and so many of the skills I enhanced here will be directly relevant here. Moreover, enhancing my skills has also made me more confident which will vastly benefit me going forwards.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The structure of the scheme was very impressive from the off-set. For instance, we were invited to attend a pre-vacation scheme day where myself and the rest of the intake were given an insight into the firm and also informed as to what we should expect on the vacation scheme. We also had booklets which set out events and locations etc which were a real help and go-to guide during the scheme!

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere during the scheme can be best summarised as open and friendly. This was because, as above mentioned, everyone at the firm was very wiling to take time out of their busy day to chat and answer any questions I had. It was this culture which really stood out to me and helped differentiate the firm.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Very much so. For example, we had a dedicated workshop which focused on development and how we can be the best lawyers we can be. This, for me, really highlights how much the firm invests in its people and their training and development. I was also trained throughout the scheme e.g. during my time in the department where I was provided with feedback on how best I could improve.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I believe the one-week scheme provided me with the opportunity to really envisage what it would be like to have a full time role at the firm. This was because, during the scheme, I was able to experience not only the work of lawyers, but also other aspects e.g. networking.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • By experiencing first-hand the type of work the firm does, and the life of employees at the firm I was able to gain a good insight into the culture of the firm. For example, the firm has an active choir group which everyone was very much welcome to join so there was a real sense of collegiality.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I think the option to choose a preferred seat really played a key role in helping me decide my future career path. For instance, I was quite interested in finance and so being able to work in the finance team gave me a real insight into the type of work here and, importantly, the opportunities available going forwards.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was well reimbursed for my experience. This helped me as I was required to book accommodation in London for the time during my scheme and I felt the remuneration allowed me to cover this. It also allowed me to sustain myself in terms of food in the evenings and mornings and I would have lunch at the firm!

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were many opportunities to network and meet a cross-section of the firm. For example, the cookery school allowed us to network with the graduate recruitment team and the drinks allowed us to network with partners. There were also opportunities such as drinks in a nearby bar with trainees which allowed us to get to know more employees!

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The networking opportunities were great. Having the opportunity to network informally with colleagues meant you had the chance to really get to know them, and for them to get to know you. I think this was very beneficial in building relationships and expanding one's network! I would highly recommend you ensure you attend them all!

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes. For example, I have a keen interest in sport and when networking with members from the firm it became apparent that the firm is active in this area. In particular, I was interested in the football team and employees were very keen to try get me involved! Being such a large firm means there is something for everyone!

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Absolutely. I think it can be difficult for many students to differentiate firms and I think the vacation scheme really addressed this by making sure you were given a clear insight into life at the firm, the expectations and the opportunities. This places you in great stead in deciding whether the firm is for you and so I would highly recommend this scheme to a friend.
