    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Before starting my internship I had heard incredible things about working at Cancer Research UK- how friendly the people are, how positive the work environment is and the many personal development opportunities available! Having spent three months there I have seen that all of these are true and I enjoyed my experience there very much. Would definitely recommend it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. The internship scheme has been running for years so most people who work there are familiar with it and do not treat interns any less than anybody else. A lot of people have also started off as interns there and/ or are quite young so are very understanding of the position we are in as an intern.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had regular one to ones with my manager in which we reviewed my progress, discussed any issues, talked through projects and tasks and my general feelings about the internship and the team. My manager had also been an intern just over a year ago, so she was very understanding and familiar with the process. Our intern coordinator also provided incredible support and had the answers to all of our questions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied from week to week. Some weeks were busier than others. However I never felt as if I was given too much work or too little work. There were also other things to get involved with such as intern fundraising, intern yearbook, personal development workshops, volunteering at events and shadowing / volunteering with other departments.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The right amount. I never felt like I was given a fearful amount of responsibility but at the same time I felt as if I was completing important and necessary tasks. Most of the time I was supporting small tasks as part of a bigger projects, however these tasks were essential in bringing the project together and ensuring it ran smoothly.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely learned to time manage and prioritise workloads, i learned to support a team from day to day and I developed interpersonal and communication skills as I was continuously liaising with people on the phone, through email and in person. We also had CV and Interview skills workshop which I feel has really helped my job application processes. Furthermore we had a presentation workshop.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is open, clean and a really positive environment to work in. It was a great place to come into every morning. People are social and friendly, yet also hard working and supportive of one another and always in good spirit and ready to make a difference. There was always an abundance of delicious baked goodies available too.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well organised and structured from beginning to end. There wasn't much more I could have expected out of it. There was always an answer to all of our questions and always a point in the right direction. We kept track of our progress. They were also very flexible with having a day off or working from home.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had workshops for LinkedIn, CV writing, Interview Skills, Presentation Skills, Grad Schemes and Assessment centres. Anything else we wanted help with we were given advice and provided plenty of information. We were allowed to shadow people in areas we were interested in and there were also other workshops that the organisation ran for everyone such as Web Writing, Google Analytics and more.

  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Many interns go on to receive a job from the organisation. Whether it be during the internship, straight after, a couple months later or even a year later, they are very keen to take on interns who have worked hard and proved themselves. Around half the people I met whilst working there used to be interns. They also have a graduate scheme that you can apply for.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We used to have lunch together everyday and tried new places around the area. Whilst previous interns used to do a weekly social, our intake did not do this as much however we did have a few trips to local pubs. A few of us went to winter wonderland and we also had a nice final goodbye dinner and drinks. People travel in from different places so some commutes are very long.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Our travel and food was paid for- lunch expense up to £4 a day. There were plenty of places you could spend under this amount such as Pret, Sainsburys, M&S, Waitrose, the canteen and the market! However with so many great food places and restaurants nearby it was definitely tempting to go over the amount and try new things.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are plenty of pubs and bars nearby!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • yes- if you make the effort to.
