    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at Superdrug, so much so that I'm going back when i graduate

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely felt valued by my colleagues. I was able to put forward my own ideas of how I thought work should be done, and also given lots of support and guidance in my own projects.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support and guidance, my manager always checked through my work with me, and made suggestions on other things to include. As well as this I was given a lot of training to make sure I left my placement at Superdrug with an increased amount of transferable skills. My manager was incredibly approachable, which really helped me settle in and feel like I could ask for help if I needed to.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The team went through both busy and quiet weeks. 90% of the time the balance was just right, with me being able to work at the right pace and not feel too stressed. As it always is in the working world, there were a few occasions when I had slightly too much work to do, but I think anybody should expect that when working for a successful business!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I got more confident with the systems and the way things were done, I was given more responsibility to run my own projects. I feel like there was the right balance between my manager giving me smaller tasks to do at first where he would oversea what i was doing. To then at the end of my placement me completing my own project by myself and then subsequently presenting it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • They definitely helped! My placement helped build my competencies such as time management, team working and organisational skills. As well as my technical skills such as using Excel and coding softwares. It also gave me an appreciation of building attractive PowerPoint slides, and how these can make a massive difference to presentations.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was great. The office is all open plan and hot desking so you could sit next to a different person every day. I think Superdrug has a really fun atmosphere, with lots of different events going on throughout my placement, such as an office tea party and team rounders. As the office is so new it also felt really fresh and created a really good working environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. My manager had a plan of what he wanted me to achieve in 12 week increments. We talked about this from the start so I therefore knew what my goals were. As the role was quite technical there was a logical structure as to how I would learn everything, which really helped me feel confident in the role. Towards the end of the placement when I had hit all the milestones my line manager had set out for me, I could work more autonomously on my own projects so there was slightly less structure. But this wasn't a bad thing!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invested in me hugely. During my time I received substantial training on various systems that were required for my job, such as SQL, Tableau and VBA. During my time I was also able to attend a team away day where training and team building activities were carried out. As a team we also received specialised sales training.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Superdrug don't have a graduate scheme, so in terms of applications its more of an ad hoc basis. However I received a graduate job offer after my six month placement, so if you impress during the time then there is the option for future employment. But if you don't get a role after your placement, plenty of roles become available on the Superdrug website.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was, we went out to lunch every Friday as a team, and also had a few team nights out to celebrate peoples birthdays. Most of the office also usually went to the pub after work on a Friday. My team also had an afternoon where we went and played rounders and other sports in the park. Everybody at Superdrug is really friendly, so there always seemed to be something going on.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Superdrug is based in Croydon so it is slightly cheaper than central London. I lived in a house share with other young professionals and rented an en-suite room costing £750 a month all bills included. In terms of costs of living, I spent around £60 a week on food and going out, so it was relatively cheap. But I didn't eat out very much, if you wanted to go out a lot I would say it would stretch towards the £100 mark.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't really explore the nightlife. But some of my colleagues went out a few times, but they didn't stay in Croydon but went elsewhere.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We mainly just had lunchtime trips on a Friday and went to the pub.
