    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at CRUK. I've just graduated from university and this was a great way to gain some real world experience and self confidence whilst having some amazing support.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely felt valued by colleagues. I was given tasks which really mattered so now I have finished I can quantify my achievements which is useful for me moving forward. My team were all really lovely and supportive and did not mind answering the 100 questions that I had.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I felt I was given a lot of support over the course of the placement. I had regular 1 to 1s every week to check in on my progress with the tasks I was doing, how I was feeling about it all and any aspects of personal development that I wanted to work on. On top of this we then had workshops as an intern cohort from CV to presentation skills which is proving really useful in applying for future positions. We also had extended reviews throughout so at the end of my placement I could really quantify what I had achieved as well as things like what I did not enjoy so much and what I found challenging.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy working closely with my manager and then the entire team. We were also invited to team meetings across the department which really helped gained a perspective of the organisation. I was given a clear project to work on which was the delivery of the event in the second half of my internship so my workload increased and changed over the course of the internship which I really enjoyed.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility due to the huge nature of the event. This increased as my time went on and was introduced to me slowly allowing plenty of time for me to feel settled in and aware of the expectations.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have already received a degree and I feel that this experience has really helped me develop skills which I gained in my degree as well as things such as IT skills and creativity that I had not done in a long time.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was always really helpful and friendly. Lots of people have been interns so understand what you're doing. The open plan makes it really social and you gain a real awareness of what other people are doing. The office is really flexible with the hours you want to work so I was offered to start and leave half an hour earlier.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was really organised with regular reviews with my line manager. There was always plenty of notice for personal development workshops and reminders put in for when we had to do things. I switched line managers halfway through but she still came in to my 1 to 1s after she moved department for a smooth transition which was really good for continuity.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel that as an intern you are definitely invested in with the workshops that are provided and some people from our cohort have ended up with contract or permanent jobs. I feel that the experience definitely helped with my personal development and has provided me with plenty of examples for my CV and interviews.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects are very good with some of our interns gaining jobs. In my team a lot of people were interns and either continued working at CRUK immediately after the internship or returned after doing other things. After the internship we still have access to the internal jobs boards and am part of an alumnae group on facebook and linkedin which is a way of keeping in touch.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes everyone was really social. As interns we had an induction which was a chance to get to know each other and we often went out after work. Through intern fundraising we also worked together on fundraising projects which was also very social and was an added element to the internship.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live in south west London so had to commute in every day. Most of the interns didn't really live in a close vicinity and some commuted in from a far distance. The cost of socialising I'd say is pretty normal for London but due to working at CRUK lots of local companies offered a small discount.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is pretty good. There are lots of bars and restaurants around on Upper Street with plenty of happy hours on after work. The office is only a maximum fifteen minutes walk away from Kings Cross where there is also lots of stuff going on and lots of transport options obviously to go further afield.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There's a weekly newletter which is sent out to the whole Angel building which people submit events to which are going on such as yoga, volunteering opportunities and fitness classes. For our intern fundraising we had events such as a netball tournament and pub quiz for staff which were really successful.
