    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at ASOS due to the amount of responsibility and opportunity you get given as a buying intern. Although at times there was a lot of work and the environment as quite stressful I always had a lot of support from my team, friends and other interns which made the whole experience more enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued as an intern at ASOS. You do not get treated any different than another member of staff just because you are an intern. Both teams I worked on over the year placement were very supportive and gave me help or training wherever it was necessary and some members of my team have now become good friends.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Yes I felt extremely supported and guided by my managers and team members throughout my placement. I had regular one to one meetings with my buyer on both teams I worked on and worked closely with the assistant buyer making sure we can catch ups every 2 weeks so I could voice any concerns or issues I was having and they would help me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the fast-paced nature of ASOS the majority of days were extremely busy. As you gain confidence within your job role you are delegated more and more responsibility which is extremely rewarding but also makes your days much busier. I think as an intern I actually enjoyed the fact I was always busy as it meant that my team trusted me to do the job role of a buyers admin assistant.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I would say it definitely varies how much responsibility you have depending on the team you are on but consequently I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement year. Over the year I built up a lot of confidence within my job role meaning that things I couldn’t do at first, by the end of the year were my own responsibility and I was training new employees which was very rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am so glad that I have completed a placement year at ASOS as I feel so much more confident going into my final year of university after working in industry. By putting the first 2 years of my course into practice has helped me understand and relate to a lot of modules in my course a lot better. Not only this but you build up a lot of confidence over the placement year which will help with presentations and group projects in my final year as well as having gained contacts within the fashion industry that I can use for my dissertation.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the ASOS head office is fun and crazy, each day is different from the last. Everyone I met throughout the year was very friendly and always happy to help with any question I had. I completed my placement in menswear and the menswear floor is very relaxed and everyone is very welcoming and friendly.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My placement year at ASOS was extremely well organised and they really took care of all 27 interns. We had an intern leader who was amazing over our year organising monthly training sessions and our intern graduation at the end of the year in June to celebrate our achievements where the CEO attended and personally handed us all certificates. When speaking to other people at my university about their placement years it was clear that ASOS was one of the more organised intern programmes within the fashion industry.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Over the placement year the interns are offered a lot of training and support. As well as being given the same training that a regular asos employee would get we also had monthly intern sessions where useful training would be provided in a 2 hour session e.g. Linkedin and Excel. As well as this we also had the opportunity to go on training courses outside of the office alongside other ASOS employees and interns so they definitely invest heavily in their interns.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Towards the end of our 1 year internship at ASOS all 27 interns (across retail and technology) where given the job offer to return to ASOS when we graduate from University this coming summer (2018). I am so excited to return back to ASOS and continue my buying journey with such an inspiring and fast paced company who are constantly growing and aiming to become the worlds number one online shopping destination for fashion loving 20 somethings.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Over the year there were so many social events to participate in, whether this was the Christmas and Summer ASOS parties with the whole company or team nights out and intern nights out. I got involved in everything I could to make the placement year as memorable as it could be. The head office location is in Camden so it is perfect for after work drinks and dinner!
