    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very much an enjoyable experience, and provided me with the sort of opportunities an aspiring engineer would want to encounter within an internship. My work colleagues were always friendly and on hand to help if necessary, and the work itself was varied and at the cutting edge of the company.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was assigned complete autonomy to validate and maintain a technology that had previously never been tested in the water industry, and so the trust on this project ensured I felt valued at all times. Especially when providing feedback to management, and engaging with critical discussions regarding my feedback and findings. In a broader sense, it was harder to feel valued in the overall team I worked within, as the time scale dictated I could not properly engage and understand so many other interesting projects my colleagues were conducting, although the team was consistently kind and welcoming to myself, always answering my questions as best they could.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Guidance was present and excellent throughout the process. I was assigned a line manager, who conducted monthly reviews of my progress, discussing any concerns or feedback. Furthermore, I was assigned a mentor who was readily available to offer guidance at any given time. The graduate HR team were also always keen to maintain contact and receive any feedback I had to offer.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work load varied due to the nature of the projects I covered, however if my workload was ever light on a given day, there was ample opportunity to involve myself and take on additional tasks in completely new fields to the one I was originally covering.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was assigned multiple projects to own and complete during my time, including taking control of projects previously covered by senior engineers. The responsibility I was given was excellent and really allowed me to grow as an engineer, and understand the role engineers perform in Severn Trent.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Above all the internship has made me aware of just how relevant so many of the soft and hard skills learn during a degree are, while also giving me opportunity to develop these skills. Many of the skills I developed during the internship I am now applying to my degree, and I feel the internship has really allowed me to grow to become a more effective engineer and worker.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office changed from day to day, and during my time at Severn Trent I covered 12 bases stretching from Coventry to Derby to Sheffield, and so I experienced a huge scope of the ethos of Severn Trent. The general atmosphere was energetic and friendly whether the staff be the technicians or office based staff, and was enjoyable to work within.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This was the first year Severn Trent had offered engineering internships, and it was clear that a lot of effort had been applied to make it a real success. The line managers accepted that as the first engineering cohort there may be issues, but were extremely active in pursuing feedback and acting upon it immediately. The internship was well organised, and will only become better.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • During my internship I had to complete numerous training exercises on the online Severn Trent hub. The training was adequate for the role performed within the internship.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Severn Trent is very keen to take the opportunity to hire undergraduate interns who successfully impress within the internships, and offer opportunities to maintain contact post internship.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • During the internship there was several opportunities to catch up with fellow placements, taking time out from the usual working day to discuss how we were finding the placement and company. Unfortunately, as Severn Trent is such a wide spanning company, fellow students were mainly based at different offices.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living and socialising within the midlands is very reasonable and presented no issues.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I was based in the East Midlands and so based myself in Nottingham which has a very good nightlife for students. Opportunities are also available to work within Birmingham which has just as good a nightlife.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • During my internship I didn't experience much social scene outside of work amongst colleagues, opportunities are more available when working at the larger Severn Trent office locations such as Severn Trent HQ in Coventry.
