The Role
I found my placement with Tesco to be extremely enjoyable - I was given an immense amount of freedom with the direction in which I wanted to take my placement. I built great rapport with my fellow interns and all the staff which made the time pass by far too quickly.
My contribution felt valued to my colleagues and I was treated as a member of the team from day one. I was given a wealth of responsibility but never without support and allowed to flourish within my role to the upmost. My colleagues have continued to stay in touch ever since and the work I did whilst there has carried on.
I had weekly informal discussions with my supervisor and four weekly reviews with my line manager. These meetings reassured me that I was making adequate progress but also served to show my bosses how far I had come along. The support and advice I received was very beneficial, continuing to be today.
Incredibly busy! Retail is a thriving environment and the store I was placed in is the busiest in the region. I had proper breaks as required but never had any time which seemed spare or pointless. Tasks were plentiful and it was imperative to muck in and be a part of the team.
The level of responsibility I was given was unprecedented. I was allowed to take control of a department, act as the duty manager and maintain my own body of work. These things all gave me great experience and I was supported well throughout them. I wasn’t expecting as much responsibility at the start but was very ready for it by the end.
The skills I developed as part of the internship have hugely benefited me as I’ve returned to university. Time management and leadership skills would be those which I would highlight as of the most importance. I also built up a lot of professional connections which have already helped my studies.
The Company
The store was a vibrant hub of activity with dozens of fundraising/charity events taking place throughout the week. The atmosphere amongst the staff was joyful and everyone certainly made coming to work very enjoyable. Even when times were hard and the workload was huge – the team made a real effort to prevent me from being burdened.
The internship was very well organized and structured as a whole. The regular trips to London for training were very helpful in terms of personal development but also as networking opportunities. I didn’t find the weekly conference calls helpful however as these tended to interrupt my work schedule or take place on my day off.
A huge investment was placed upon me! Weekly coaching sessions, monthly development days and a plethora of resources were available to me throughout the duration of the internship. I also had the advice of several senior management figures accessible to me at all times. I could not fault the investment.

Future employment prospects are good as I now hold an offer for the graduate programme. This will give me the opportunity to rise quickly through the ranks within the company and with a very decent graduate salary. I am incredibly pleased to have been given this offer and intend on making the most of it.
The Culture
Sadly we were placed quite far apart from each other but we did get to spend a good amount of time socially together on our group development days!
I lived at home and so it was no different to usual.
Same as usual due to living at home.
Good social scene within the store.
