The Role
It was a really rewarding experience with lots of responsibility from the outset. There were
Initially I feel it took a while to really become a part of the team, and entering into a pre-existing team, particularly in stores where people had been there for many years was a challenge. Yet over the 10 weeks I really felt integrated. I felt my colleagues enjoyed having me around and valued my input.
Management were absolutely fantastic, providing regular reviews and advice throughout the scheme. Were always willing to talk and listen to any concerns and willing to help out as much as possible.
There was always plenty to do on a daily basis, ensuring the department ran effectively. The store is a really busy environment and there were always plenty of tasks.
There was an enormous amount of responsibility within the placement, where by the final few weeks I had the responsibility of running a department independently while a colleague was on holiday. This allowed a really hands on experience of
The scheme has hugely benefitted my communication and time management skills which will be really beneficial moving forwards.
The Company
Within the store everyone got on very well and it was a fun place to be. The team involved a real mix of people from many different ages doing a variety of different jobs. Being a large 24 hour store there were a high number of staff working a variety of hours which naturally made It hard to meet everyone unlike in an office context.
The scheme was very well organised in terms of actual structure, offering a real variety and a clear plan to follow throughout the programme. This plan also involved room for flexibility to suit individual needs to ensure the scheme was as effective as possible for everyone. However, in some cases we received logistic information quite late which sometimes could be somewhat stressful.
I felt the firm really invested in me, particularly in the instance of the development day. This provided us with really valuable information on giving presentations to carry forward. Additionally within my store I was given the opportunity to experience duty management which was really interesting and felt like a great deal of responsibility.

National Travel
Since completing the scheme I have been offered a place onto the graduate scheme for the next year and also was offered a part time job within stores whilst I finish my degree.
The Culture
The stores scheme meant that we were located away from each other around the country and thus lacked the social scene due to not working near each other.
My scheme allowed me to choose where to locate and therefore lived at home.
