The Role
A great insight into company culture and what working as a permanent employee at the company is like.
I felt like I was given my own work and responsibility as quickly as was practical. I was immediately trained and had my own processes so I felt like a valuable part of the team.
The training was practical and relatively thorough but people were happy to help wherever you had a gap in knowledge and support you in new or complex tasks. This was true of my team and the contact I had with other firm employees across different departments.
This varied in my first few months, mostly being busy for almost the whole day but still getting a lunch hour and leaving on time at half 5, once I was fully trained. When I wasn't fully trained to do things in the beginning/didn't yet have system access I struggled to find things to do. But now, 5 months in, I find myself busy the whole day, though usually getting away before 6.
I have had my own processes, which have changed greatly from when I started due to team restructuring. I have taught myself new processes and then trained an associate on my team so we have been able to share the new, greater workload.
This placement has been well-structured and I have felt like I received all the training necessary to complete my day-to-day tasks. I feel my communication skills and confidence have improved since the beginning of the placement and I have been continually learning throughout my time at Morgan Stanley.
The Company
Quiet, but casual and people were generally chatty when they're not too busy. The office is sociable and there are different social committee organising nights out relatively often at different departmental levels.
The part of my placement which overlapped with the summer internship programme was very structured with lots of talks and different training and development sessions. The second half of the placement had less of that but I felt like this lined up with me taking on a greater level of responsibility in my team so the drop-off in group sessions wasn't necessarily a bad thing as it could at times disrupt work.
There were a variety of sessions on things like communication, personal branding and personal development throughout the placement.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
They are excellent and the benefits improve on the grad scheme, for which I have accepted an offer.
The Culture
Yes, including three company organised and paid for socials.
Glasgow is a very reasonably priced area to live and go out in compared to other cities.
There is a lot of variety in the nightlife in Glasgow, much of which is a 5 minute walk from the office.
There were some committees that interns were able to get involved in but this is more actively encouraged and available at the graduate level. There was organised football fives but this was mainly, if not only, attended by men.
