Software Engineering Intern Review

This was my first internship, and I had a really great overall experience (this including work, events, networking with other interns, communicating with my team, finding out about Bloomberg culture, participating in BOB). The work I had to do was challenging, required technical skill and innovative thinking and I think I had a lot to learn from this, but I also delivered a working product, valuable for the team after I leave.

I felt welcome to the team from the first moment. Even though at the beginning I didn't communicate with them that much, once I got some important advice and feedback from my team leader and my mentor, I've began to have an even better experience with my team. They have always helped me when I needed to, or gave me their opinion when I needed to make a decision.

My mentor and team leader helped me with very clear goals and work that has to be done. I received feedback on my work at all time and I knew what to improve or what to add or change, so there were no problems regarding this.

I believe the amount of work to do was right, well proportionate, not too much work for an intern to do, but also enough to have time to deliver a working product.

I've had the responsibility of working on my project on my own, designing most of the parts in how I thought was the best, also chose the right tool to do the right job.

I have developed some skills which will definitely help me in the future, starting with communication skills and team-workings skills, which are really important. This being my first real-life work experience, I understood how working in a team is like and how important it is to give feedback and ask for feedback in your work. From a technical point of view, I got a grip on how to work in large projects, which have a lot of components, some of them even spread across teams, how to integrate my work seamlessly in the bigger project, while maintaining backwards compatibility and integration with the other components.

I like the open office concept. It really brings people closer, because, knowing you can just get up and go to talk to anyone you need, who is just a few desks away is a good thing.

Every part of the organizing was thought out and there were no problems in accommodating.

The training was really great and it provided interns with valuable information which would be needed later in the projects, things like Bloomberg specific technologies, how to get in touch with the people you need, when you need help for specific things, how to use the Terminal with some functions. Apart from the training at the beginning, there were lots of other events which provided technical training, like events on BU, financial training, but also CV & Career training.

I really hope I can come back next year for an internship at Bloomberg, as it was a really great experience.

With a lot of intern events, there were no problems in making friends and meeting new people to expand my network of friends. A lot of interns I already knew before, so we were already friends and our group just kept getting bigger.

The cost of living in relation to the salary is really good, I've got to experience a lot of things which I couldn't afford before, like fancier restaurants or traveling to other parts of the country or other countries as well. London is definitely a great place to live, which gives a lot of opportunities, and with the salary, you can afford to try out a lot of new things.

I'm not really much of a night life person, but I was a few times in Camden Town and it was really great, a lot of people were having fun and I had fun with my friends there (that being the center of the night life in London). Being such a big city, there are a lot of other areas where you can have fun, you don't really need to be in the clubbing zone, as there are a lot of other pubs, restaurants, cafes and so on in Soho, Shoreditch for example.

As I said in earlier questions, London is a big city and there are a lot of opportunities for everything.
