    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed gaining new experiences, having the opportunity to build new skills, working in a fast-paced environment, network and volunteer with the firm. I also really enjoyed the beginning of the internship where there were a number of fun activities organised for the interns which allowed us all to get together and build relationships in a relaxed environment. However, my day to day tasks, however were very long and repetitive processes and was less related to my degree than I expected. Furthermore, There were a lack of creative, varied and tasks involving communication therefore the role itself did not suit me.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was part of a supportive team and manager which meant I felt valued by my colleagues. The Glasgow office has a positive working culture and from what I experienced everyone was willing to train me on new tasks, answer my questions and help wherever necessary. The social committee also helps with getting people together which definitely helps to improve working relationships within the office.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was part of a supportive team and manager and I was given a buddy at the beginning of my placement who set up fortnightly meetings throughout to offer advice and guidance. Everyone was willing to help and answer my questions wherever necessary and train me on new tasks/tasks I was not so comfortable with and my manager always had time for me if I had any queries and supported me when I wanted to attend additional volunteering/committee meetings and shadow new teams.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was kept busy on a daily basis as I was working as part of two teams, Stock Loan and Cash dividends. I was also given a process which I took charge of which took up most of my mornings. I was given several daily reporting tasks and controlled the authorisation of payments between both teams sticking to tight deadlines. Additionally, alongside my daily tasks, I took on extra roles after I was given the opportunity to join two of the firms committees. As well as this, my manager gave me an on-going project throughout my placement which I was able to go back to when payments quietened down which meant that I was never stuck looking for jobs.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Being part of a control team, I was given a large amount of responsibility which involved communicating with the vendor team in India, delegating tasks and controlling the authorisation of a number of payments on a day to day basis. The tasks which I was doing would still have to be done by if not myself then another member of the team which helped me feel valued throughout my internship.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to gain new experience working with global teams and working in a fast paced working environment. My technical and analytical skills were improved through my day to day tasks and my communication skills were built on by attending presentation skills training with my manager and having the opportunity to network at various firm exhibitions and formal/informal meetings and additional team shadowning.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Good positive atmosphere in the Glasgow office which I believe is definitely helped with the additional committees, team to team meetings and town halls. These allow office members who may not usually get the opportunity to meet/work together to connect about something they are interested in and build new relationships. Furthermore, as well as the firm wide social committee, my department have their own social committee which encourages the department to engage in fun activities both within and out with the office and have occasional evenings out.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship overall was set up well. The induction week which was put in place for the interns was both informative and fun and allowed us to gain valuable insight into the organisation and connect with one another. We were each allocated our teams with a chance to speak to our managers and a past intern before starting the placement which helped ease my nerves. HR gave us a midpoint and an endpoint review where we were able to discuss goals, progress and future plans.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At the beginning of the internship we were given an induction week which involved a number of informative and fun training activities including soft skills and the financial environment and a number of online training courses to complete with general information about the organisation and its policies. In the week following this, my manager gave me a 5 day induction pack which he went through in sections each day which allowed me to grasp various aspects of the department, various roles, tasks, systems, acronyms and office jargon which helped my understanding and allowed me to settle in more confidently. Due to the fast-paced nature of the office, training was quick and not always thorough and I found that I had to use my own initiative and ask to be trained or reshown how to carry out new tasks. However, everyone was always willing to answer my queries whenever necessary and show me new things.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was offered a full-time role within the firms graduate scheme and with this there are a number of benefits which the firm offers. However due to my own personal preferences I felt like the role itself was not suited to my character or future career prospects. Furthermore, the mandatory rotations within the firm were off-putting as little notice/option is given prior to the rotation, therefore I will not be taking future employment.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there was a firm wide social committee which gave employees across the firm a chance to socialise through various events and my department has their own social committee which gave people a number of opportunities to participate in outings, events, and informal competitions. Furthermore, the charity committee gave employees the opportunity to participate in volunteering and various fundraising events to give back to the community and connect with one another. My fellow placement students also set up a facebook page and whatsapp group which allowed us to socialise and ask one another questions in regards to the placement and the city itself.
