    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really love the internship. As interns, it is really important to feel important in the company, and be considered as an employee, which is the case with Expedia. We are listened, we have responsibilities and the company makes sure we are working on our personal development. They want us to enhance our strengths, and improve our weaknesses.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel extremely valued by them. They do not considerate me as an intern, but as a proper employee. They are always here to give advice on how to handle certain situations, to help you on anything. Expedia is a family, and everyone feels that way, even me after a few days.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given support and guidance on a daily basis. They trusted me, but they were here for any support. Every week, I have a 1-1 with the Area manager where we can discuss on any specific topics (+ feedbacks). He organises a weekly training for the colleagues, and my supervisors give me regular feedbacks.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am very busy as I am working on two different markets for two Associate market managers. Therefore, I need to be very well organised, and set up a proper weekly action plan on how to work on both markets. Moreover, I am also working on a specific project which takes 40% of my week.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given a lot of responsibilities, which is a very good idea. In fact, interns love to be considered as important assets of the company. They love having responsibilities, and feel trusted by the colleagues. One of my supervisors gave me a small portfolio of properties that I manage myself, and improve their production in the market. She fully trusts me, and then makes me working harder.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere is very friendly. We don't treat the others as colleagues, but as friends. This results in spending more time with them, but also more willing to help each other in any situations. No one is working in its own market. Expedia is a family, a whole community with a strong employee-oriented culture.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation was very good. In fact, every new employee starts with a whole training session with different colleagues, experts in their own field. The week after that, there is an onboarding week where all the new employees across the EMEA region meet each other, and have a 5-day intense training. They work on their soft skills, how to handle objections, and how to build strong relationships with partners.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Expedia invests a lot in terms of time and money on new employees. They really want to make sure that they have the best travel team in the world. They also provide a full document mentioning the specific competencies every employee needs to have in order to grow within the company, and then get promoted in the future.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I live in London, I would say very expensive. In fact, the rent costs around 80% of the salary (especially for interns)... So make sure to be prepared to have a certain extra budget. Moreover, as London is a very lively city, there are lots of internal events with colleagues, and afterworks we don't want to miss.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London is a unique city with such a great nightlife. There is constantly something to do in the evening, even on weeknights. Afterworks are also part of the London culture, which is a great socialising activity. Angel is a growing area with plenty of bars, and Shoreditch is a few minutes from the quarter.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 4/5
