    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement in the HR department within Bosch. From the onset the work and roles I was assigned came with great responsibility which really made me feel like a real part of the team. I was told before I started that I would spend all my time making teas and photocopying when this couldn't have been further from the truth. I quickly learnt the high impact my role had on the entire HR team and seeing my work benefit and help others spurred me on to be the best I could be.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Right from the beginning of my placement I felt very valued, I had many meetings with a number of colleges to ensure that they were clear on what I wanted to get out of my time working at Bosch, how they could help me progress and grow as a professional individual.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was always support and guidance from all my colleagues not just my direct manager. I knew and felt very comfortable with going to my colleagues if I had any problems work or non work related.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Working in HR day to day tasks can really vary. I never ever found myself with nothing to do, but understandably in a department that is made up of many aspects some days would be a lot busier than others. During the run up to payroll the work load would increase and we'd have very strict deadlines to stick to. However this allowed me to adapt my prioritising skills and taught me to work well under pressure.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Right from the onset I was given a lot of responsibility. I was assigned tasks that would solely be looked after by me and if they weren't completed to the right standard or on time they would have a huge knock on affect from the company. Although I had a lot of responsibility there was always support and help when I needed it, if I was ever unsure on the decisions I was making my colleagues were always there to encourage and assist me in the solution.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The overall placement in general allowed me to see first hand all the aspects of business I had read about, watched presentations on and completed essays for, put into practise in the real business world. It connected all the dots and linked all areas of my degree together. Being in the HR department has been great, it has allowed me to integrate with all divisions within the company which I feel is only possible in this role as no matter your background or area in the company everyone required the services HR provide. Therefore I really feel I have gathered a lot of first hand relevant experience in depth across the entire company that will be imperative to my further education and future career prospects.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office varied significantly from day to day which really kept me on my toes. I worked closely with 4 Business partners that were each highly involved with different sites across the country and were therefore travelling a lot. Some days me and the other placement student would be the only people in the office, dealing with all the phone queries and employees walking in. Whereas other days in the office we could be holding various meetings, interviews, Skype conferences involving individuals from many departments internal and external.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised, our predecessors initially stay on and work along side us to support and complete a full hand over period which allowed us to fully take over the role and ensure that we will fully trained and able to complete all tasks alone by the time they left. We had regular meetings with our manager to discuss our work and to ensure we were happy with our tasks.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was enrolled on a number of training courses which really allowed me to grow and develop during my time with the company. They taught me skills that will be essential going forward with my career and continued education.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Highly appealing, I am very impressed with the company as a whole and working for them again in the future would be a great and a real aim!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were a lot of students based at my location and we all added to a social media group prior to us starting which allowed us to get to know and meet each other. Once we started we quickly arranged social events and nights out together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being close to London (a lot closer than my University and Home) I personally found the cost of living and socialising a lot higher than I was used to which did restricted me more with my social activities than I had been used to in the past.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I lived about 4 miles from where I worked and the Town I lived in had a lot of pubs, bars and a club that gave lots of options for nights out. The tube stations also offered a direct line into central London that ran until midnight.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Bosch offered a number of classes that associates could attend outside of work, badminton, football and Pilates to name a few.
