The Role
At the beginning, it felt like I was going to be struggling all year as I was venturing into a new field in computing. But as the weeks went by, with the invaluable support and encouragement from colleagues and, the excellent environment in the team, I gradually got into the flow and it was no limits from there on.
I believe this was the biggest form of motivation I had to do better and constantly improve my abilities and skillset. I was always delegated system-critical tasks. It was apparent the team was counting on me to deliver and, with the incredible support I got when trying to figure things out, my confidence level grew as the weeks went by. During meetings, colleagues were always interested to hear what I had to say about anything.
Everyone always went the extra mile to help when the can. Doesn't get any better than that.
Pretty busy. I always had to review my calendar and work ethics every week, and reordering my priority list to ensure I was spending my time appropriately.
Enough to make me want to stay indoors all weekend to rest from the week and get ready for the next. Only time I felt like an intern was when I reminded myself I was one.
They have helped me discover a new path in computing I never pictured myself taking in the past.
The Company
Because people had the flexibility of working from home, on some days the office can be pretty quiet and a bit dull. On most days, with more than a handful of people in, there's always a great atmosphere. Lots of banter to go around. Either way, I always had a lot of work to do so I sometimes cherish those dull days when I can just plug in my headphones and not worry about missing any banter.
As a result of the fast-paced environment we were in, there wasn't a year-long plan on what I would be working on. This meant I was always getting tasks on the go, which was exciting. Overall, my manager and the relevant people already had a plan in place for what the objectives of the placement should be, irrespective of what I would be working on at any given point during the placement.
Getting invaluable time to talk and learn from colleagues, providing a series of on-site and online training programs, access to multiple online paid content websites to learn valuable skills, I'd say it was pretty well rounded. I was working for a firm that understood people do better when they're better equipped with the skills and tools they need to do their best work.

Majority of the full-time employees were once interns. From the onset, this motivated me to want to do more to earn my place. I came to realise the firm is always looking to retain talent, you just have to prove you're likely to be a good investment. At the end of my work placement, I was offered a full-time role to join after graduation.
The Culture
Yes
I lived a couple of miles away from the area I worked in but, it definitely does cost more to live and socialise around there. Roughly around £1000pm for rent. Can't give an estimate on the cost of socialising, but it's definitely more expensive than anywhere else in the city.
It was city center, everything happens in the city center!
A couple of opportunities did come up, majorly around the work the firm is doing in the community. Also learning about different opportunities from colleagues. Most importantly, because of the flexibility of the job, one could always easily get involved in these opportunities.
