The Role
I enjoyed it a lot. The interesting people and other interns I got to know was a fantastic experience. Everything around the internship was well planned with frequent talks and intern events.
My colleagues supported me through my internship both with advice and guidance. They challenged me with questions and helped me out when needed. My tasks were both independent as well as team work so I needed to adjust how I worked. Overall, I learned how to take ownership and be responsible for my duties.
I had follow up meetings weekly with my manager. It was easy to reach them through varies communication channels at all times. In addition, all interns were assigned a buddy and a mentor that could help you out with informal questions.
I was quite busy with several meetings and events during the day. Still, every day was different sometimes I just did my daily tasks and projects. Some days included video conferences, monthly meetings, mentor catch ups, etc.
I was responsible for the daily tasks at a easy level. I was not given any risky or too demanding tasks. However, the manager challenged us with tasks that required us to show ownership and ask other colleagues to do it right and efficiently.
I believe the internship has improved my communication. I send more emails and simply have adopted a more proactive behavior. More often I ask questions when I do not understand a topic etc. I am more curious, but also put things in perspective more often. I do not cry over a bad grade or a bad day. I think more positively overall and feel like I can manage most of the tasks and challenges I am given. So, in life generally I believe this internship helped me discover and clarify a few things for me. This will to a certain degree help me out in my studies as well, but personally not a lot assisted me in my specific degree. My internship made me realize how the work you are given in a job differs from your academics in college.
The Company
The general atmosphere was relaxed and open. People were willing to answer whatever questions you had and help you out. They were curious about you and your background, skills etc. It was open landscape so people could communicate all day long.
The internship was really well organized, opening ceremony and closing ceremony. We met fellow interns regularly, The manager, mentor and buddy facilitated continuous follow up. The guidelines were clear, but for the projects you were required to navigate yourself in the right directions sometimes. You could not believe that someone would be there to do the work for you - you had to show ownership and ability to think outside the box at certain times.
The firm had an own website with tutorials, information and lectures that could facilitate your learning. They let you use this resource during work hours, but no access outside of work. Also before the internship you were required to complete an excel test as well as the first three days of the internship included a few training sessions. By having a mentor and a buddy you were safe that someone would always help you out if needed. People on your team also facilitated information and meetings to provide informations and training in certain topics.
Company Parties/Events
It is really appealing.
The Culture
Yes, I found my fellow interns a lot of fun. We were a diverse group of interns and unfortunately not enough time to get to know all of them. Still, we always had a good time. My fellow interns were hardworking and optimistic.
Th cost of living was $500 per month. There were a lot of great spots for socializing, beautiful mountains for hiking, fun restaurants and bars.
The nightlife was great, but I did not go out that much during my internship experience.
I lived with people outside of the firm so I was involved in various activities and social settings outside of work. I had a great time because it allowed me to calm down and recharge for a new week. I used my weekends and after work for hiking, training, shopping, concerts, BBQs, and tanning by the pool.
