The Role
I enjoyed working at Aldi, the role was challenging and interesting.
Greatly. I always felt appreciated by both Management and colleagues.
Guidance was usually available straight away, but sometimes it took a while because of others workloads.
Workload varied, very busy during own project go live, less busy but still plenty of work to be doing during regular day to day.
A large amount, first six months was conducting own project which had significant impact on the business.
Technical skills learned will of course assist me in the degree. e.g. SSIS, SSRS, .net development. Also, the more personal skills e.g. professionalism, time management, project management will also be beneficial I'm sure.
The Company
The general atmosphere was good and positive. Colleagues are always willing to help. Everyone in the office is friendly despite the very corporate exterior.
The placement was set up well, I had a 2 week training plan leading into the project which I would take a lead role in. This project lasted 6 months where I learnt a lot. Afterwards I was moved into doing more everyday development work. This was much less organised and my workload varied a lot (something which happens in industry anyway...).
The company invested in me quite a bit, I attended meetings with directors and other management to make sure I fully understood the impact of what we did at work and how the company works. I also received an SSIS course from Quanta. They also invested a considerable amount of trust in me, which was a good call.
Company Parties/Events
Very. They offered me a fantastic job at the company, especially for a recent graduate. Unfortunately I had to decline because of where the position is situated.
The Culture
No other fellow placement students within the NIT department. Colleagues yes, we went out for some food now and again and made some really great friends but none lived in the local area.
Living was relatively cheap, easy transport links to all sorts really. train into London to see friends and family was a common occurrence for me and that was cheap and easy to do. Birmingham city close to see friends at the uni there too.
Yes probably around once a month there were work organised activities which were outside of work. And some good socials and Christmas party.
