    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my placement at JP Morgan. I found that the company had prepared fully for our arrival and made you feel genuinely welcomed by all of the staff at the company. I found that each week presented a new opportunity to develop my skills in a new area. Not only did I enjoy going to work, but the HR team were fantastic and organised some great social events throughout the duration of the internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by my colleagues during my time at the company. Not only did they ensure that I had regular meetings to gain valuable feedback from my team on the work I had been doing. If I did make mistakes my team would give me constructive feedback and spend time with me to explain and correct my mistakes which was appreciated.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a number of occasions where I was given a great deal of support particularly at the beginning of the internship. This did stop to some extent during the middle of my internship. Instead of receiving feedback on a daily basis I would have weeks with little interaction from my senior management. This however was difficult given that my VP was not based at the same location. Having said this, at no point did I feel that I couldn't ask for support from a colleague.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For the vast majority of my internship I was kept extremely busy which is exactly what i wanted from this experience. I wanted work experience and not simply to become experienced at making my managers favourite cup of tea! This was one of the best things about the internship which was that I could take control of my work load and when I felt that I could handle extra responsibility, I was allowed it.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In a similar answer to my previous question I felt that I was given a lot of responsibility during my 10 weeks at the company. One of my highlights was that I was able to present my findings to some extremely senior managers at the organisation with weekly updates in a deck. This helped keep me engaged during the internship because it gave me a sense of worth and purpose.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I write this review, having just completed some university work I can honestly say that the skills I developed during the internship have hugely helped my studies at university. From my presenting skills to my Excel based skills I have taken what I have learned during my internship and have benefited hugely in my university studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was a hard working place to be, having said this there was a relaxed atmosphere at times. This was helpful as a new employee because I would not feel scared or intimidated to talk to other members of my team. The atmosphere did vary quite significantly from team to team depending on the dynamics and ages of team members. I did feel that certain teams had a better atmosphere than others in the office. Overall, a good working environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I thought personally that the overall internship was extremely well set up. I was fortunate enough to be placed in a great department of the bank who had some extremely proactive graduates that organised overviews for the interns. I do know that some interns who were not in my department felt that they missed out in that sense. However as mentioned before I thought the HR team did a great job in organising the internship for us.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt that this area of investment from the firm into my own personal development and training was a very positive aspect of the internship. At no point did I feel that the firm cut corners into investing into improving my skill set. One piece of feedback is that I would have benefited from some specific Excel workshops in the first week of my internship. This would have given me help in some of the more difficult aspects of the internship. It would have free'd up some time for my managers as I wouldn't have needed as much help in basic excel tasks.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects with the organisation are good. I was very fortunate in the sense that I was offered a full time position on the CADP (Corporate Analyst Development Programme) and therefore look forward to coming back to the organisation in the near future providing I am able to secure a 2:1 at my university. This is something that I look forward to doing after my studies.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene amongst the fellow interns was good. We were able to benefit from the events that the HR team put on such as a mid term social and an end of term social at some great locations. In addition to this, we organised other social events amongst the interns with a large WhatsApp group. From my knowledge I don't know of any issues with any of the interns which is always a positive outcome.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living and socialising in the area that I worked was reasonable high. Having said this, when I compare this cost to the equivalent cost of London based living it is reasonable cheap. Overall there was access to cheaper living depending on location of accommodation during our time in Bournemouth. The only issue with cheap accommodation was that due to the beachside location of the campus, most nice accommodation is at a premium during the summer months.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in the area in which I worked was extremely vibrant. Although I did not benefit from being in London, I do still believe that Bournemouth offered a lot in the nightlife sense. There are a good variety of bars and clubs to enjoy on both weekends and weekdays. It is a shame that the office is not nearer the city centre however because the nightlife is not directly walkable from the office.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Although I didn't myself get as involved with the activities outside of work offered by the company, I still am confident that there was a lot of opportunities for employees. This is a great testament to the organisation's culture. The only thing that I would say is that there could have been more information regarding the external opportunities available to employees when we started.
