    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my work during the internship, because unlike most roles in my division, i interacted with external parties outside Goldman Sachs. I was also given the opportunity to take charge of a project on a novel technology that enabled me to further understand how such a technology will potentially impact on the financial industry

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • This is something i liked the most. My managers continuously made it a point to ascertain the impact the kind of work I did had on the team, and entire floor. It made me realise how interconnected the work we do is, and also the level of responsibility it carries. Furthermore, i found it interesting that my colleagues were continuously interested in the various intern seminars I attended hosted by the Human Capital Management team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • From day one, my manager asked me to sit at the desk next to his. Though a small team, we had a lot of responsibility and the work we did was often new to me. This compelled me to ask many questions of which my manager always had time to answer. Not only did i get support from my manager directly, I also go support from the executive manager whom I could catch up with periodically. The way the floor is set up allowed many of the interns to interact with other managers and this way learn different skills on the different projects I was involved in.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • aside from the last week, of the internship, I was very busy. the work was demanding but interesting. It compelled me to deliver my best and not rush anything. I worked on a schedule/plan such that I could get advice on the work I was doing. Though busy, I made it a point to have lunch outside the office with other interns, or colleagues. My team realised this and was perfectly fine with it because I still did my work at the end of the day. Time management is key, and when I was in doubt about something I didn't waste time trying to solve it alone, I asked someone who would know the answer and this way learn more.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As suggested in my first response, I was given a great detail of responsibility from the onset. It was more than i expected. I was in charge with managing our external counter party trading details, compiling the powerpoints presentations for the external meetings we had. I also had to summarise these meetings for senior managers and our global team members. Aside from this i was in charge of reforming the global file sharing platform for me team, further amplifying the kind of responsibility I had.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • after completing my engineering degree, I am now doing a masters in banking and financial regulation of which the knowledge I developed, of the banking system and how the different division operate, has enabled me to understand the context of what i am studying. Similarly, from the training and exposure to the work i did in my internship, I further understand what party of an investment bank I would like to work in going forward.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was generally relaxed but professional. Everyone knew what they role was and had to do. However because the sub division was relatively small, everyone had a close interaction with one another which transcended on the interns on the floor too. The close knit environment created a family like atmosphere, very supportive and interested in one anothers development and progress.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. It was a mixture of training sessions, talks by leading professionals internal and external to the firm and various social team events. The feedback and evaluation process was also thorough, as it compelled many people you worked with to give feedback on you. The work I did was varied from daily tasks to long term tasks that extended my entire internship period. I felt this gave me a good mix of how it would be to work full time.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I received a great deal of personal training and development. The firm employed various activities and insight events to ensure we were knowledgeable about how the firm is structured and what each division actually does. They did this on a firm wide level and on a sub division level reinforcing all that we learned and putting into perspective the work we did your sub-division in context of the firm. from knowing very little about how an investment bank works to what i know now doing a masters in banking and finance, I realise they invested a lot of time into ensuring this.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • very appealing. From the short time at the firm, i realised that career development is a priority in the firm and they are well positioned to ensure this. The firm also advocates taking on challenging projects and when possible ensures the opportunity for this to stimulate broke. The future greatly appeals to me in this firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • there was a very good social scene. I had lunch with different interns and colleagues daily. Learning from them about their work and how they find working in the firm. It gave me a good first hand impression of the work life in the firm. With the added events with the human Capital management.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • expensive. London is generally more costly to live in and work in, and socialise in. I can't give exact values, but per month rent for a one room can range up to 800 pounds. Cost could be greatly offset by staying with a family or sharing a place with a friend.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The night life was really good. I met a few spaniards who arranged a couple of VIP parties in the city. Couldn't have had it any better way than good food, music and people. Aside from this, there were many local bars which we could catch a drink after work with some colleagues.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work than i expected. For instance, my intern group had an opportunity to do community outreach, and social events affiliated to network affinities. In addition, the intern group organised many activities during the weekend such as hiking, site seeing and lunches.
