    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • There were times when I didn't have enough to do, especially at the beginning, but that quickly changed as members of my team got used to having me around and started giving me more and more tasks. In general, though, I had a really good time at Deloitte.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues, especially as the tasks I was assigned increased in difficulty. I felt that I was contributing to the projects and bringing value to clients, and that my team appreciated it.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was always someone willing to answer any questions I had, and anyone, from analysts all the way up to partners wanted to teach me something. I never felt uncomfortable asking for clarification, and everyone was very helpful and understanding.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were definitely quite a few days, especially at the beginning, where I could have done with more work (in which case I'd just make rounds around the office asking people if they had anything I could help out with). There were a few days when I had a little too much to do, but there weren't too many of them. Over the 6 weeks I was there, I only had to stay late once.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given tasks that I managed by myself and only reported back with the results. They were things that matched my knowledge and skill level, but I was given complete responsibility over them.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The knowledge I developed is not majorly useful in my degree, but I will definitely use all the skills and knowledge that I learnt when I join Deloitte for the graduate scheme.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my team was brilliant. The team welcomed me, and everyone was absolutely lovely to me, and I felt like I was one of them really quickly. We have even gone out for lunch to welcome me to the team. Of course, the general atmosphere is that of working hard and delivering results to the clients, but people are always willing to help each other and no one felt uncomfortable admitting they didn't now something.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Could be much better organised. I was assigned a champion who only met with me once. I also had a buddy, who was always at hand. We were meant to have a meeting halfway through with HR, but that never happened. The internship could have benefitted from a bit more structure. There were also only two socials for interns.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the company invested a fair amount of money in me, mostly through informal, peer-to-peer learning, as a lot of the time quite senior members of the team spent their time on teaching me new things. It was in effect 6 weeks of learning that I was compensated for.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They are very appealing, and I have chosen to accept a graduate position in the Indirect Tax Advisory department. Deloitte invests a lot in the development of their employees and the perks are really good, so I am looking forward to joining the firm next year.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We only had 2 socials formally organised by the company, which was a nice occasion to socialise with students who were doing their internships in different departments. I generally socialised from other Tax interns - we would have lunch or drinks together.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I did my internship in London, which is a very expensive city, so the costs of living and socialising are very hard. I study in London, so I simply stayed in my term-time accommodation, but for those who study in other places it was quite a big expense.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Probably decent, but I don't really go out much. There are a lot of pubs around though.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really during the internship, but I know there are quite a lot of opportunities once you join the company, such as volunteering, and employee clubs/societies. There were even some lunchtime language lessons.
