    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my time at J.P. Morgan. There were many events which made the whole experience much more fun and enjoyable and there were plenty of opportunities to connect with other employees and fellow interns. Overall, I had a very good summer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was put in a very small team where it was only me and my manager who worked on the project. I really enjoyed this because some other people were working in larger teams and I usually prefer smaller teams because it is much easier to keep track of what everyone is doing and to get to know each other as well.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had daily meetings with my manager and that really helped me in getting the precise specifications for the project. Furthermore, I participated in many pair programming sessions with him and he thought me a lot about the internal systems deployed at J.P. Morgan. The fact that I was his only intern also contributed to the fact that I felt strong support.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Obviously the business varied from day to day and grow over time since I became more acquainted with the systems and the project I was working on. However, I was had some free time which was great for me because through the learning portal we have access to Pluralsight and I watched many courses on topics that interested me, so I made sure to use my time well.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Since I was the only intern on the two person team, I was responsible for the whole SDLC and I really enjoyed that fact. It was surprising in the beginning and I was asking a lot of questions since I did not expect that level of responsibility for an intern but I really got a lot out of it since I was exposed to many technologies and systems.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was using Python and a RESTFul API. I had previous experience with Python and APIs so I was feeling comfortable with that fact. However, I still learned a lot and especially I learned how to work on big projects where how you do things is very important. I definitely received a lot of valuable hands-on training and I am sure that all software practices and the whole Agile methodology will be very helpful to me in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was located in the office on Bothwell street and at first I felt a little surprised since most of my fellow interns were at the other building which would mean it would be harder for me to network with them. However, most of the colleagues around me were very helpful and friendly and I did not feel like I was missing out in any way.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised considering there were over 80 interns. There are weekly drop-in sessions with people from the HR department where you can go and share your opinions and experiences and complain if you want something to be changed. As previously mentioned, there were a ton of intern events, so I was quite happy with the organisation.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I loved expanding my skills and doing online training on subjects that interest me. I benefited hugely from Pluralsight and the fact that I had some free time on my hands. Furthermore, there are many groups within the company which focus on different areas. For instance, I am interested in security and there was a security group which gathered on a weekly basis and different people gave talks on different issues so this was also an opportunity to learn a lot.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • J.P. Morgan seems like a very good company to work for. If I planned to stay in Glasgow, I would have probably accepted their offer since they are one of the top employers in the area.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Even though we were such a big group of interns we were hanging out regularly with each other, especially for lunch. It was always interesting to hear what other people were working on, especially when it turns out that someone is working on a feature which you use or need and vice versa. I enjoyed the company of most of the other interns and that also contributed to me enjoyed my time at J.P. Morgan.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I think it is relative. For instance, my apartment is within 15 minutes from the office and I am paying around 330 quid for that + bills. Obviously, going out in the city centre is more costly than staying at home and cooking dinner for yourself but I would not consider Glasgow as an expensive city.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am not used to going out to clubs any longer but from what I have heard from other interns who were going out regularly was that the Glasgow scene is quite good, especially if you are into techno and house music.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were quite a few possibilities and societies that one could sign up for that were focused on different things which I felt was a very good thing. Also, there were barbecue nights, scheduled runs around the office building and so on, which had a positive effect on the morale of the employees and most people enjoyed participating in those.
