    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the insight day at BP! It was great to be surrounded by like-minded people who shared similar interests to me. I learned a lot and feel like it was a great learning resource for interviews and assessment centres in the future. The discovery day comprised of talks, presentations, tours, networking, practice interviews and assessment centre training.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt valued whilst I was at the company because I was invited to make contributions to the team. Everyone listened to each other. I was encouraged to ask questions, which were answered clearly. I was given further advice on making an application for a graduate role and was also given constructive criticism after we completed each workshop.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I felt well supported on this programme. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome and we were guided where to go and what to do next. Employees were patient and encouraging throughout the day and were happy to answer all the many questions that we had.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The day gave me an increased understanding of how a global company operates, as well as a further insight into the gas and oil industry. It gave an insight into the wide variety of skills and knowledge required in a team to operate successfully. Being able to speak to interns/graduates showed me how my degree could fit in to the industry.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight was very well structured. Transportation was arranged from the local train station to the site. Following icebreakers, we met challengers on the BP graduate schemes, who informed us what they did on a day-to-day basis, as well as the support they have received to gain professional qualifications. We played an energy game to learn more about BP’s operations, and also met people from different support groups at BP.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was very welcoming and I really felt at home while at the event the other students were all very friendly and since everyone came from all over the UK there was a lot for us all to discuss. We were all from mixed disciplines so not everyone was studying the same subject which made the day a lot more interesting as everyone had different questions to ask when prompted.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Where possible, the activities were well tailored to my interests and backgrounds. It was extremely useful to run the assessment centre and technical interview sessions in a way where we could gain experience of how they work in a practical way, whilst doing it in a relaxed environment where it was made clear there was no pressure on how we performed.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The day was very insightful. The networking session provided us with the opportunity to discuss with employees what it is like to work for the company.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Networking with some staff from BP including some current interns working over the summer and some full time long term staff gave us a great insight to the company culture talking to them was one of the highlights of the day as the information and experiences they shared with us gave me a great understanding of what the company culture is like within BP.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The content was valuable. Although I am not 100% on my career path yet, this was a good set in helping me decipher my interests.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was reimbursed travel expenses. Food and drink were provided throughout the day.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • The day presented opportunities to meet with a range of employees of the company (interns, graduates and more senior staff who worked for different areas of the company), and gave plenty of time to talk to them and learn about what they do. There was also adequate time to talk to the other scholars and network with them. It was good to have the staff and interns present at lunch to talk to in an informal way.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • They were a mixture of informal conversions with staff and other members of the BP team and formal presentations from staff and interns who gave us plenty of opportunities to ask any questions we liked.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • All BP employees can get involved in the Business Resource Groups, which are employee networks to set up to create an inclusive place to work. We met members from different groups. We were also informed of the opportunity to take part in voluntary work on the ICBT site. The summer interns took part in a day cleaning the paths surrounding the local lake.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • The day is perfectly organised. The activities were extremely well varied and all were applicable and relatable to my degree and what I wanted to know about the company. The staff ensured we were comfortable throughout and we were made to feel welcome. Alongside the insight into the company, it was helpful in understanding the application process for graduate and intern roles.
