The Role
I sincerely appreciate my summer internship at J.P. Morgan. The CADP internship is really well-structured with many events and speeches dedicated to interns. The working environment in Bournemouth is awesome, with many professional colleagues but much less stressful. The initial training is negligible but you will have many overview sessions organized to get a glimpse of how your division fits within the organization.
Colleagues in JP Morgan are really valuable. They always try to make you feel part of a big team and they are always willing to support interns’ daily work. The team I was joining was a really small one though. However, as a business management function I got a lot of exposure to senior management.
My supervisor was really inspiring to me. from the very beginning, we used to have weekly conversation on the different projects I had to follow and on my personal preferences in terms of future career. Still, my mentor was really helpful during my internship as she always tried to advise me and let me meet people in other teams.
I was pretty busy every day. A part from the first week, in which it is kind of normal to spend most of the time doing trainings and watching what others usually do, the rest of the internship was full of tasks to do. especially if you are able to gain trust from your manager, he or she will be more than willing to delegate to you.
I feel that my team gave me significant responsibility in relation with the projects I was in charge to follow. It is important to show that you are a trustworthy person and you can deliver a good work even without the strict supervision of your manager. if you are able to do that, then you will be delegated with lot of responsibility.
Although, as an intern you will not receive much training, at the end of the internship you will realize all the set of skills that you have developed. As a matter of fact, most of them can be easily re-applied to your studies - e.g. analytical thinking, power point and excel knowledge, team working.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was awesome. The bournemouth office is really new, facilities are well-designed and maintained, and all the comforts you need are available. The working environment is professional but not stressful, therefore the perfect combination resulting in a truly stimulating environment.
The internship is really well-structured. Many events are organized and dedicated to interns, thus making you feel part of a big community. The events consist of senior guest speakers, informal networking event, mid-internships and final internship dinner event, informal talks with other graduates and finally overview sessions on other divisions.
Firm does not invest a lot in training compared to other divisions - especially compared to other front-office or middle-office functions. I think this might demotivate people that are prompted to be considered a step behind compared to other colleagues and other teams. it might be important to put everyone on the same position.
Subsidised/Company Gym
future employment prospects are pretty good, even though from this year onwards they have decided to merge the CADP program with the operations program. This results in a general cut in the number of positions available and thereby working opportunity in this area. However, they sponsored a lot of mobility after the graduation scheme.
The Culture
yes.
The cost of living on bournemouth is relatively cheap compared to London. Accommodation are easily affordable even though the company does not assist you neither in the search nor in getting some useful contacts to find it. restaurants and supermarkets are relatively less expensive compared to London, where everything is more expensive.
Pretty good nightlife at very cheap prices - you can have a lot of fun.
there are several activities you might get involved after you finish working. JP Morgan organizes some of them, especially the different associations. Some examples of that are sport team event, volunteering, etc. furthermore, people are used to celebrate birthdays, promotions, etc. all together and therefore there is always a good reason to celebrate.
