    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the work placement immensely. The internship was very well organised, and the people within the organization are very passionate in the work they do. The culture in Expedia is also amazing, and very much like a tech firm.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team is incredibly talented in the work that they do, and also very humble and willing to learn from others. They valued my ideas and opinions, and consulted me on different aspects of analytics, things that I learned from my Masters course.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At the start of my internship, I was feeling a bit lost as I had limited knowledge of the business and struggled a bit when navigating through the company's internal databases, and my manager provided a lot of support and guided me through. I also received a lot of help from my team, who were very willing to answer my questions.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As I was working on my own project, I took the initiative to drive it at my own pace.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Aside from my own project, I didn't have much responsibility in the team's day to day tasks, or ad-hoc analytics tasks which were cascaded down to our team, but this was understandable because I was relatively new to the business and at the early learning stages.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I came in with some coding experience, but there were coding workshops during the internship which served as great refreshers and I was able to learn some new things from them as well. I also learned more about the business consulting side of analytics, which will be very useful for my future.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The culture in Expedia is amazing, very much like a tech office. There are great facilities e.g. a table tennis table, Amazon lockers and great socials (e.g. rooftop drinks once a month) for colleagues to socialise and get to know each other. People are very passionate about travelling as well, and there's a lot of talk about recommendations to do in different places.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. There were socials for the interns to get together, talks for us to get to know what goes on in different parts of the organization (e.g. Product, Tech, Lodging Partner Services, Data Science etc.) and coding workshops to serve as refreshers for those with more experience and a skillset enhancement for those with less. There was also a Day of Caring session, for the interns to give back to the community by providing some business consultations to local charities.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was very fortunate to be able to attend an offsite meeting, which allowed me to get to know the wider analytics team and also learn from them as well through a series of workshops and hackathon sessions. Through the meeting, I was able to develop my analytical thought process and gain a better understanding of the business.
