    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the variety of work I was involved in and the amount of involvement I had in the actual product. The team I worked in was great. Everyone was really welcoming and supportive and a joy to work with. I learned a lot about software development as well as enhanced my engineering knowledge.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team I worked with were amazing. We all got on well and enjoyed working with each other. The other teams were very approachable and were always happy to help. I was given a lot of freedom to work independently knowing there was support available and trusted that I would seek help if I needed it.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Monthly meetings were set up with the manager of the intern program to ensure I was getting all I needed and could out of my placement year and to make sure I was meeting the university’s expectations. I also had weekly meetings with my team manager to make sure there were no problems with work and was also an opportunity to highlight any projects I would like to get involved in.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Working within a team meant there was always work to be done. A good amount of work was planned for the team every two weeks and once a task was done or running another could be started. There were times when you had to wait for something to finish running however that time could be used for independent learning using resources provided by the company.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was treated the same as the other members of the team. After a couple of months of on the job training, I could take any task from the team board with little input from the rest of the team and was trusted to complete this to a high quality. There were also opportunities to lead meetings and discussions related to your work.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This placement has given me a better understanding of how engineering software is developed and used. I also had the chance to do training on some of the other products that I wasn’t working on so have experience on a number of computational fluid dynamics products. Working in a team has improved my team working ability as well as communication and team organisation skills.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was generally calm unless there was a software release coming up. The office is fairly informal and was normally fairly quiet with the occasional random discussion taking place.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was well organised with regular meetings set up to make sure things are going as planned. There is an opportunity to switch roles during the placement to try something new. There is not usually set work or projects for the interns to do however this provides flexibility and variety in the work that you can get involved in.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were a couple of training courses that took place during my placement which the interns were able to take part in. A variety of resources were available to aid in independent learning, not just for software and engineering, but for business and interpersonal skills as well. If it was possible for them to do it, they would.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The part of the company I worked in was quite small so may be quite difficult to get a job with after however if there is space they are usually happy to take you back. They have recently employed a couple of previous interns. In the overall company, there are many job opportunities and opportunities to move up in the company.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I would often go out for meals with my team and occasionally meet up outside of work. The other interns sometimes went out for lunch or at the weekend especially when the new interns start as it is a good way to get to know each other. There is not much to do near the workplace however it is close to two towns where there are plenty of shops and restaurants.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was fairly low with a variety of supermarkets to choose from to keep living costs down. However, the work place is quite hard to get to so travel costs can be quite high depending on whether you choose to travel by car, taxi, walking, or public transport.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In the immediate are, the night life was quite poor however there were a few towns nearby where you could go however you would need to think about transport.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Being close to a couple of towns, there was always activities to get involved with. Also, a few people from work started playing sports outside of work together so if there was an activity you wanted to do but isn't available already you can always start it.

    3/5
