    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My role was hands-on practical lab work, which I really like. I had the opportunity to learn a wide range of protocols and the theory surrounding them. When left to work autonomously, the work was very satisfying, but still challenging!

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The entire lab team were amazing. Always offering practical help as well as career/further study advice. We socialised out of hours occasionally and all got on very very well.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Although sometimes busy, my supervisor always eventually made time for me. And when they did, the feedback was brilliant, extremely comprehensive and understanding.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Initially not very. Over time as I was more comfortable in my role I asked for more until I reached a challenging but gratifying dynamic balance.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As well as my own individual project (which was amazing), I was responsible for day-to-day tasks that involved other peoples' work. So I was well trusted.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Without a doubt skills for life. Work ethic, perseverance, critical thinking, logical planning, practical skills - all firmly embedded in my professional brain.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • We always had a laugh and a good chat, but when it was time to work we all knew and were willing to knuckle down.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Initial teething issues followed by a slow work period. After 2 or so months it was great.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Everyone in the lab and office took it upon themselves to teach us what they were doing, how and why. Everyone was thoroughly invested in our learning.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Other placement students have returned there, but I do not want to pursue them as I would like to move into a different scientific field.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We lived nearby and exercised regularly together, but rarely went out as we were so far from anything.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cheap living in the area, although the placement didn't pay very much.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It was great, if you were prepared to pay for the taxi back from Manchester.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We lived far from anything, so other than gym sessions we didn't do too much.
