    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Looking back I really enjoyed my internship as I felt I learnt a huge amount during the course of the ten weeks. I found the first few weeks difficult because I felt overwhelmed by the huge amounts of information that I needed to know and was also surprised by the huge amount of responsibility I was given. However, when I came to grips with my specific job I began to enjoy it more and more every day.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All my colleagues were very welcoming and friendly towards me. They always had time for me to ask questions even when they were very busy themselves. There was a great team spirit among my department and everyone treating each other with care and respect. I was involved in several social events that took place within my team and they were extremely kind when I left by buying me a few presents and arranging a leaving drinks.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My direct manager was very understanding and listened to all of my queries. I respected him a lot as he had a lot of work on but would still always find the time to schedule a weekly 1:1 with me to talk about my progress. At some points I felt he lacked knowledge of the internship programme itself which would mean that I would have to tell him about it in further detail. However this was probably due to insufficient training from the recruitment team to the managers.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Over the course of the internship I learnt how to divide my time effectively by arranging overviews and networking meetings but still allocated enough time each day so I could complete my daily deliverables. I was very busy on most days and if there was a moment I had spare, I would ask my colleagues for some more work. Towards the end of the internship I had less work as I finished my projects and there were restrictions on work I could start as I would be leaving in a few days so the projects would just be left unfinished.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was particularly surprised by the amount of responsibility I was given when I started my job. This was daunting at first but I became used to it as time went on and learnt how to handle the daily challenges of the department. I liked how I did a mixture of project work and daily BAU work so I felt like I was really helping my team with their workload.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel I have developed many of my personal skills such as public speaking, data analysis and interpersonal skills. Above all, I believe my confidence has improved dramatically. This may be due to the fact that during the 10 weeks my understanding of the financial services industry increased which meant I could talk about my work convincingly with other colleagues.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • As expected in an office such as J.P. Morgan the atmosphere seemed serious at first. However, I soon realised that everyone was friendly and approachable. I realised that everyone knew each other well and there was a real team spirit. Quickly I became part of all the jokes etc. which made every day working life a bit more fun.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was so impressed by the level of organisation of the internship. The recruitment team were absolutely faultless. Not only did they organise several social events for us, they also provided networking events and speaker series which meant that the internship was extremely informative. They also were extremely responsive to all of our queries and were friendly and approachable at all times. There were never any moments when we were unsure as to what we should be doing etc.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All the interns were requited to complete an objective setting worksheet. This meant that we could clearly outline what we wanted to get out the internship and indicated how we would make sure we could achieve these targets by the end of the internship. I was impressed because at the start we had to complete several hours of training exercises online in order that we had a sound background knowledge of banking.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I managed to secure a graduate job on the 2018 Corporate Grad scheme. I really liked the way that J.P. Morgan treated the internship as a 10 week interview as it meant that you had enough time to show that you could be a hard worker but also that you had a great character and fitted into the company as well. I think they did a really good job of enticing us to work at the company as they introduced us to a large number of people and also showed us the extensive benefits people receive when they work there.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, I would say there was a large group of interns that got along well and would organise several events throughout the internship. We were always very inclusive and there would always be someone who you could have lunch with or talk to on the bus etc. Sadly, I wish we had spent more time with the graduates that were there so they could give us a real insight into what it would be like to be a young person working for J.P. Morgan.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was fairly normal. I preferred living in Bournemouth than for example London where costs are very high. It meant that we could enjoy ourselves after work without having to worry about money etc. However, I would say that our accommodation was expensive for what it was (a small studio). This may be due to the fact that it was difficult to find accommodation for such a short period of time.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Bournemouth has very good nightlife for a city that is outside of London. There were a multitude of bars that had a great atmosphere so we would always go for interns drinks there. Additionally, there are numerous restaurants and pubs where you can enjoy a chilled evening with friends or colleagues. On the weekends, Bournemouth has a great club scene which we loved.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, J.P. Morgan hold a number of after hours clubs and activities that they welcomed the interns to get involved in. I took part in the Bournemouth office summer of sports tournament for rounders which was an extremely fun event that ran for a few weeks. Other than this, there were also BRGs (business resources groups) which encouraged many of the new employees to get involved.
