    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found this placement very enjoyable. I had the opportunity to work alongside a great group of employees and interns. There were lots of chances to meet new people at social networking events. Furthermore there were many educational events which were put on to make the most out of your time there.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleges. Many permanent employees would take interest in my project to offer advice and for their own personal learning. Furthermore shadowing other employees was very much encouraged and I felt like they appreciate do the interns taking an interest in the work they were doing. This gave a great learning atmosphere and productive use of time. I never felt like I had nothing to do.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Each intern was assigned a manager, technical mentor and buddy (who was usually a graduate student). This meant that there were plenty of people you could turn to for support at different stages in their own careers. I would have weekly meetings with my manager and tech mentor so they would always encourage any questions to be asked in these sessions and would monitor your progress and help with any issues which occurred.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had two projects to complete within my team which consisted of three interns. This was a fairly heavy work load as these are many other events which you were required to attend. These varied from networking events to talks from different high level members of staff. Also shadowing other members of staff is strongly encourages so if you felt like you didn't have much to one day, you could always contact people to see you could shadow them.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Two other interns and I were the only people working on the project I was working on so you felt very in control and responsible for your project. We were given the impression that someone would take over the projects after we left, which made us work harder when thinking about the quality of work we were producing. However we were not given any responsibility which would affect the day to day running of the bank.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I study mechanical engineering the technical skills I learnt were not directly related to my degree so they have not yet been that useful. However the things I did learn inspired me to educate myself in technology in my own time and this of other business ideas! However the social and communication skill have proved invaluable.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very friendly and I always felt I could approach other employees for help on my work. The office was newly refurbished and they implements hot decking so you did not always sit at the same desk everyday and could choose somewhere different. This was had to know where to sit at first but you go used to it. There was a dress down uniform, my manager wore trainers and jeans. There was also Thai chi on fridays.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. I received lots of details prior to the start of the placement and a call from my manager about the project I would be working on. However I only received the exact address of the placement two weeks before so this was not very helpful when trying to plan accommodation. Although when I got there is was very well organised and there was an exact plan for the whole 10 weeks and this was very rarely veered from.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were many talks about various areas of technology which were compulsory to attend so these were times they were investing in us. Furthermore there was a wide catalogue of possible courses which you could enroll yourself onto which would be online for you to complete in your own time. Furthermore I attended a day session for agile training which was very helpful for when I worked in a intern team.

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare from home

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They made it clear from the start that if you did well in the internship you would have a chance at getting a graduate offer. There was a mid-term review were you were told you progress and whether you were on track for an offer. The career prospects looked very promising as the company is so big there were many different roles you could eventually try.

    5/5
