    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was very enjoyable. The work that i had to complete was good and challenging, the team that i was working with for the year were also very helpful and supportive. The larger expedia engineering team were also great. There is a good work life balance at the office and the wider team made it a pleasure to come into work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. When i joined, the part of the team i was working with were very experienced within the company, so helped me as a newbie. As the year went on i contributed much more to the wider team, working with other pods, and at the end of the year, with new colleagues, I ended up teaching them many things about the company and specific technologies i had learnt over the year. I was given feedback from my manager about being seen as a equal developer instead of an intern, which was great!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given all the support that i needed across my internship. I worked with many technologies across the year, which required communication with the different geographical pods, communication outside my team and also with my manager. I always got help when needed, although I try to jump in and learn myself. I also got help with the company, learning the org, and about different sectors. This was organised by the placement supervisor, and was invaluable!

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always relatively busy over the work day. I took on work that I knew i could complete, work that we had groomed and placed within the sprint. I had a project i knew about, so ended up working on a lot. I always had an adequate work load, and when i found myself free, i helped others in the team to make sure we finished the sprint on target.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had a good amount of responsibility on the placement. I wasn't heavily relied on by the team for support issues, and pager duty. This was good for me because I was new to the company and projects in the team. However at the end of the placement i began to help with support issues and more. I had a project that was my own responsibility, and worked on a new big priject for the team and helped make some key parts of it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am about to go back to university. I managed to experience a lot over the year, and worked with many new technologies. I feel that all the experience i got will make it much easier at university, working not only with new technologies, but also with very experienced people too. I am very thankful for the experience!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great within the office. My team were amazing, helping me out with everything i needed, and also the wider teams and the whole org. The EWE organisation was great, the work life balance was very good. There were many social events organised by the organisation i worked within, within my wider team and also amongst the interns. It was a perfect balance and i can see why Expedia is rated so highly on glass door!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised! I was very impressed with the setup, not only of the team and the work i received, but also the work that the placement supervisor put in to make sure that we were all on good teams, that we got a good taste of the work life, and that we understood the whole organisation.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Coming in straight from university meant that my skills were already well practised. I went straight into using technologies that I had experience with. I picked up new technologies working and was given the chances to put training into the backlog to show i was working on new skills. Instead, i took smaller tasks with these technologies and learnt on the go, which suited me more. I helped tech python and took some courses in ios development and cyber security.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing! after being offered a job following the placement i cannot wait to start again. Having experienced a small section within the whole technology stack, I cant wait to come back and get stuck in again. I learnt so much over a a year as an intern and cannot imagine how much i will as a FTE.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other interns were great! I had a large group of summer and year colleagues. This reduced with the end of the summer, but the group were still great. I knew one guy before starting, but have made many good new friends and gained experience through them also. We helped each other with things we didn't know, and had social events. The events organised by the placement supervisor were also fun and helped me get to know everyone.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • A mixed bag. There were cheaper places to live, and cheaper things to do, but the salary was generous enough to afford something nicer. I lived in a nice area. The events organised were always with free drinks and food, or with a tab. The company were very generous!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in the area was good. There are lots of pubs, bars and clubs. My team were very sociable and had a very large network within the org. We were always going to pubs and bars for drinks. Any chance was taken. So when guests were over, it was a good excuse to go for drinks. This is the perfect way to get to know everyone. It was a blast!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We were always going out for drinks as a team. Other than this, I didn't do too much with my team mates. With other interns we went out for dinner and drinking events also. I also went out with some members of the org to do activities such as bouldering. Otherwise i didn't do too much with work friends because I was always busy with my own mates.
