    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working at Mentor Graphics was a great experience. I gained insight into the software development industry and enhanced valuable skills.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I believe I was treated as a valued member of the software development team and treated no differently than other members. As an intern you are some what more flexible in terms of working on new projects which I think is highly valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I worked in the Hampton Court office which had a very good team culture. I never felt afraid to ask my supervisor or other team members for help. I was even able to interact with more senior managers who were very down to earth and happy to help with any issues.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would would usually have a reasonable amount work . Sometimes there have been times where I have finished all the work related to the software development project but usually there are other activities which can be done. Other activities include working on marketing material or maintaining testing suites to name a few.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At Mentor Graphics I worked as a QA Engineer and I believe that Interns are given real work with real responsibility. The company relies on a great deal to test the product and this this the same job that other permanent QA Engineers do.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The major skills I have enhanced are team work , communication and time management from working with in the team. I believe these skills are invaluable in any professional job and I hope to use these skills in my future career and also on projects when I go back to university. Additionally, I have greatly enhanced my knowledge of engineering principles and even managed to learn some programming skills.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very friendly and supportive. The members within the member recognize the importance of learning from more experienced members when in doubt.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The role of the Intern is explained well on the job description and by the manager on the induction day. The company allows for some flexibility in the diversity of the work which undertaken to facilitate learning. For example, personal projects can be undertaken to enhance knowledge with in the field.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Full training is provided by an experienced support engineer and training is provided on a variety of products which although you may not use during the internship, It can be useful for the future. Learning is also done while working and experienced team members are usually available. Also Interns take part in a DiSC training course.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Mentor Graphics has a very good team culture and takes investing in people seriously. Recently Mentor was acquired by Siemens so it's an exciting time to work for the company and to see the steps taken are forward with in the industry. Overall I think the company has great reputation with in it's respective field and is appealing.
