    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my summer at pladis Global on the Sales and Marketing Internship. The role requires you to put hard work into it, but it was incredibly rewarding, as well as really fun. I have learnt so much that I can now take forward with me. Throughout the summer you also get to visit a factory where the products are made, and we also undertook a volunteering day which was so much fun and enjoyed by all. These days are great to get to know the other interns, and develop your team working skills.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout the summer, you are valued as an intern and are given your own responsibilities and tasks to perform which will benefit the company. pladis have a great ethos as a company and it is nice to feel that you are valued as an individual. An example of this is the project that you undertake in the last few weeks as it is based upon a current issue or idea that the company are exploring and so your ideas and perspectives are pivotal in providing the company with your research whilst giving another opinion on the matter. Throughout the internship, you are treated as an equal, and not looked upon as simply an intern, everyone at pladis are so welcoming and friendly.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • An amazing thing about this experience was the support that you are provided with throughout. The support and guidance by your management is incredible, they are so helpful and are there to make you do the best you can, rather than to criticise. You are also given an individual buddy at the company, who you can meet up with, and contact with any questions you may have or just to talk about what you have been up to. These are vital to your journey, as each new person you speak with gives you a greater insight into the company. You are also given a BDE buddy for your time in the field, this is someone who will be doing your job full time in your area. This is really useful at the beginning as you can observe them and see what you can take into your role. However, although these are designated to you specifically, whoever you meet along your journey are so friendly and always offer themselves as another point of contact.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • An interesting thing about this internship is how you create your own timetable for each day, personal organisational skills are key for this role. At the beginning of the summer, you are out in the field selling products into stores and trying to increase distribution in these stores. For this, you are given your own car and you need to make sure that you organise your route for that day in advance. However, there is also flexibility in this, as depending on how far you have to drive, and how close stores are to each other, you have to pan how many store visits you will do accordingly. Similarly, when you are given your group project, it is up to you to distinguish how many days you will work on the project, and how many days you will be in the field. However, within this role, the flexibility means that there is always something that you can be doing, and therefore you have the perfect balance every day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think that you are given a great amount of responsibility throughout this internship. You are valued as an individual and this is shown through how much responsibility you are given. This comes from being given your own car for the summer, through having to plan and organise you own days, and from the specific roles that you are given. In the field, you are given the responsibility of collecting accurate data that they can then use in the future. In addition, you are given the responsibility of representing the company- highlighted through your uniform in the field- which is so important that you then represent pladis in the best way possible.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt so much this summer from this internship and I will be taking the skills that I have developed with me in the future. The specific marketing and business knowledge that I have gained will not benefit my degree discipline, however, this will be key to my career plans. There are so many skills that I can utilise as I have developed a greater professional presence, increased organisational and time management skills whilst further enhancing my team work and problem-solving abilities.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • You are only in the office for a few weeks of the internship, as the majority of time you are based at home. However, the times that you are in the office you immediately pick up on the company’s great ethos and friendly and fun feel and the layout of the office reflects this as well. People will always say hello to you as they walk past, and anyone is up for a chat about what you have been doing and learning as an intern at the company, as well as telling you a bit more about the company itself and their role in it. It is a place where you immediately feel comfortable as it has a welcoming atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of the internship is seamless, it is clear that a lot of thought and organisation has gone into it as it is fully loaded which is really nice as an intern as it makes you feel valued. At the beginning you are told exactly where you will be and what your task will be each week which really helps as it shapes your internship, and you know where you are heading.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company’s investment in you as an intern is one of the most amazing things about this internship, and is what makes it stand out from others that are out there. You are given training specific to your role which enables you to know how to perform, and what the company are expecting of you. However, they also provide you with a car for the summer, provide accommodation for your time in the office, and you get to go out for some fun days, such as factory visits and volunteering days, where you really feel a part of the company. Personal development is also something that the company are enthusiastic about, as they get to know you and can see your progression throughout the internship.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects after your internship are so appealing as you have spent three months with the company and come to realise how amazing it is and what a lovely place it would be to work in. There is also an opportunity given to you as they will choose a number of interns to go onto their graduate scheme once they have finished University.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a great social scene with the company itself and with fellow interns. With the company, you are treated to work meals and fun days, and you will make some friends for life within the fellow interns. The relationships that you build with them are really key to your experience as you support each other throughout.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The company actually pays for your accommodation and food whilst you are at the office, as well as company meals which is another example of their great investment in you as an intern. However, the prices around Hayes was quite reasonable for food and drink, as we went out a few times together as interns to socialise. There is a great pub which is really close to the hotel that you stay at itself, and there are lots of places local where you can get nice food for a good price.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • This summer we experienced some really amazing restaurants, as the company took us out for dinner and cocktails several times. Also, we found some local pubs ourselves which was great. The experience is definitely what you make of it, and the evenings that we went out to socialise were all really fun experiences.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Throughout the summer we had some days out of the office, such as factory visits and volunteering days which were really fun, as well as company meals and cocktail evenings. The company also has a gym on site which has classes going on in the evenings. However, for the majority of the summer you are based at home and therefore when you are at the office, there are definitely activities that you partake in.
