    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found the internship enjoyable as I felt at ease in the environment I was in and my colleagues were welcoming and supportive. The only thing that I was not keen on was the fact that I was being given fairly menial tasks to complete on a day-to-day basis. Overall it was an interesting experience however.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that my colleagues valued my contributions as they were keen to meet with me to discuss any of my findings and they were happy to offer any assistance where they could. I felt that I had settled into the team well and had struck up a rapport with the majority of my colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager did support me when I asked a question but they were not great at giving me clear, reachable goals. A lot of the tasks I was set were vague and did not have a clear route to achieving them. My manager was also quite short in any exchanges we had.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload was quite scarce meaning that I spent a lot of time in a standard day sitting "dormant". I tried to discuss this with my manager with a view to obtaining more work and while I managed to find some, it would last about a week before I hit a dead end and could make no further progress. There were days where I was kept busy due to site tours and undergraduate events being run but these were not as often as I would have liked.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given some responsibility as I was trusted with using software programs containing sensitive information. My project work affected how a repair technician would act so I was responsible for making sure their action guides were clear and accurate. I had to check my work before submitting it and had to make sure it was correct before passing it to the relevant teams who would make the changes.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My analytical skills have been developed through the project I have worked on. I was required to understand how a specific component operates in order to review a repair report and conclude whether the repair was correct based on the information available to me. This is something I feel will be useful in the future as it is important to see the bigger picture.
