    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This was a thoroughly enjoyable internship. I was able to get involved in a variety of different tasks which allowed me to gain greater exposure and understanding of the different teams within Private Banking. I was given challenging work which helped me to develop and was given a guidance when necessary by my line manager which helped me develop further. My whole team were incredibly friendly and I think its great that HSBC provided us with a buddy and events that helped us get to know different people in the bank.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team were incredibly welcoming and supportive. As an intern, I was made to feel as though my work was valued by the team. My colleagues welcomed me as part of the team with open arms, and I was invited to events with teams which made me feel valued by them. Everyone is incredibly open and friendly.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I met twice weekly with my line manager for support and guidance but I was also able to meet whenever necessary for my work. My team around me were also very helpful if my supervisor was unavailable and it meant that I was supported by a variety of different people who all offered beneficial advice. In terms of career guidance and advice, many top tips were shared during lunch and learn sessions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was given responsibility to manage my time appropriately. The nature of my work meant that I had longer term deadlines. I was given guidelines by my manager about how to work over the course of the internship to ensure that I had a balanced workload.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the appropriate level of responsibility. I was given interesting tasks that challenged me and aided my development. There were many opportunities to learn.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It will definitely assist me in my career beyond. My confidence grew with the help of my supportive team and gained a lot of practical skills from the working environment.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • General atmosphere was the perfect working environment. A friendly team and great people on the floor.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was a very well structured programme. We had one week of training by an external company at the beginning. We had a speaker series and lunch and learns. We had team building activities too.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • It became very clear that the firm want their interns to succeed. Personal training and development was fantastic.

  • This is a company where it would be a dream to work for them! The follow-on programme is well-organised and has great opportunities.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was invited to social events with different teams across the private bank. They were very inclusive with their interns and many of the interns and graduates had lunches together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • We had an end of internship ball which was exceptional.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes- from watching the cricket at Lords or the Oval, and playing softball in Regents Park. The teams were very interested in getting drinks together and spending time getting to know the interns.
