    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Thoroughly enjoyed my placement. The work was engaging the team I worked with were very friendly and open and the support provided by mangers was fantastic. There were some HR issues relating to booking holiday however once these were resolved I had no other problems over the remainder of my Internship. I was able to engage with my line manager and supervisor to set my own targets which increased my motivation to make them.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Because I was working on a project related to but not directly involved with my co-workers day to day tasks I felt sometimes side-lined. This was due to there focus on the operational tasks that were there day jobs. I was made to feel valuable as my knowledge of the project I was undertaking increased and the rest of the team were encouraged by my line manager to engage more with my work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • very good support and guidance by my line manager and supervisor. Excluding the first few days where I was ensure of exactly what they wanted, it was always clear what they expected from me and what my deliverables were. the support system in place of having a manager, supervisor and mentor meant that even during the summer holiday period there was always someone for me to ask for support.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The quantity of work I was given was very good. At no time did I feel bored/ like I did not have enough work. At some points in the internship I thought that some of the deadlines I was given were very arbitrary and did not related to the actual project deadlines I was working on. This was only on once occasion however so overall I thought it was very good.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a moderate amount of responsibility. I was left to work in the way that I deemed the most effective however there was senior co-workers checking my work and my method of operating at all points. This was necessary due to the significant amount of resources associated with the project I was working on however it means that sometimes I had to alter the way I would of undertaken actions to suite what more experienced co-workers thought was best.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There was a huge number of development opportunities for myself. These included getting involved with the STEM ambassador program, soft skills training sessions, multiple presentation and report writing opportunities and development sessions with my line manager and a independent assessor at the end of the internship. The result of this is that my skills for communicating technical knowledge developed significantly. In addition my project management skills developed significantly.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was friendly but busy. As everyone had many responsibilities people were busy and often didn't have much time to talk etc. However they were very happy to take work related questions at any time and made time to help me develop my technical skills when ever there was an opportunity to do so.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised baring some problems booking holidays. Some more notice could of ben provided for potential trips etc. that were organised but overall there was little confusion at any point about what was going on and what i should be doing. More communication between line managers and HR would of made the internship run more seamlessly.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Significant investment in me. Soft skills training sessions, opportunities to learn more about areas of the company outside of the department I was working in were all provided. A large range of technical training modules were provided to me as well which helped me gain a much better understanding of the processes that are performed day to day in the office.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Unsure as of this time whether I have a job with them or not, however I am very keen to get a job with them and am hopeful of a offer for the graduate scheme. There is enough places on the grad scheme for all people involved in the internship scheme in Aberdeen. Very quick reply to find out whether a grad place is offered once the internship finishes (approx. 2-3 weeks)

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Very good social scene. BP recommended a flat for all interns to live in which meant that we were living together. as we were all social people this meant that we often were doing activities in the evening and the weekend, These included social and sporting events. As the amount of work required increased towards the end of the internship increased, this decreased somewhat, but was still very good.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very cheap. The rent was expensive (£100+ a week) however all other costs were significantly less than expected. Cheap activates, especially for students meant that I was able to save money over the period of work. These included £5 cinema tickets, £4 for two games of bowling, aprox £2.50 for a pint of beer etc.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was cheap but there was few night clubs. There were a significant number of good value and nice bars however only 3 clubs. Did get a little boring by the end of the internship.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a significant number of opportunities to get involve with other things. These include 8 a side football, charity events and STEM events. There were multiple intern/grad socials which were organised, which sometimes included bar tabs provided by BP. Such events include trampolining and hiking, pub quizzes and going for drinks.
