The Role
I really enjoyed my placement, not only was the work interesting but the environment was very welcoming and friendly.
My colleagues treated me like another member of the team and were always very willing to help me and encouraging of me to ask questions.
The Human Resource's team arranged regular catch ups with us so that any problems could be voiced. My line manager was always willing to help me and if he was working from home or busy there were plenty of other people on the team who would do instead.
The nature of my project was that in order for it to move forward I needed to have a lot of meetings. If I was unable to get in touch with the relevant people there were sometimes delays and there was the potential to be a bit bored. However, we were given a Charity Challenge by HR which I focussed on to keep me busy in the meantime.
A fair amount of responsibility, however my project was linked to the work my team were already doing so it needed be done thoroughly and correctly. Therefore my line manager came with me to meetings and I asked him often for suggestions on ideas going forward.
Completing various analysis tasks and learning to use new programmes such as SQL Terradata assistant has influenced my decision to become an analyst when I graduate. Therefore the skills developed will be very helpful in the future. I've also gained a lot of confidence given the vast amount of meetings I had to arrange and attend.
The Company
It was really relaxed, friendly and welcoming. There was no one who wouldn't be willing to help you, whether that was for directions or help with your project. Additionally, there was no expectation to work ridiculous hours, I arrived at 9 and left at 5, so long as you got the work done your manager was happy! Suppliers often came a few times a week as well to promote their products which meant lots of free food and other freebies which was always good fun and got you up from your desk. Also, free tea, coffee and squash - woo.
The People team did a great job and we were always well aware of what was going on, what meetings or workshops we had etc. The training days in Cheshunt were also good fun. Only slight problem was that completion meetings occurred in the penultimate week for a lot of people which left some of them a bit lost for the final week.
We had around 5 masterclasses (in things like excel, mind training and networking). There was also 2 development days, one at the beginning and one in the middle to help with presentation skills and enabling us to get to know interns in all the departments. We were also able to go on a trip to Swansea to see a new Tesco concept store. Overall they invested quite a bit alongside the everyday learnings of the job. However it would of been nice to have had a little more depth to some of the training.

Due to the restructure that was announced at the beginning of our internship which involved a lot of redundancies, knowledge of a job offer is uncertain until the end of September/early October. In the past, however, I believe the majority of interns have been offered a job.
The Culture
There were two work socials arranged whilst I was there, one being an expensed meal. People from my department tended to go to the pub after work on a Friday. The rest of the students on the internship were also great fun and we had quite a few trips to the Hatfield Spoons together as well as going on a few nights out in London.
The pubs were reasonable though seemed pricey given I've been to Uni up North. However the internship is reasonably well paid so it didn't matter too much. Also as it's just out of London it's not as expensive as it could of been.
The only 'Nightlife' was the Hatfield spoons or a couple of pubs in Welwyn. For nights out we went into London.
My department had a football team, badminton and tennis. I personally didn't get involved but some of the other interns did and really enjoyed it.
