The Role
Very much so, a lot of responsibility with the work set by your line manager. In addition, the work life is very good with lots of "stuff" other than work such as sport, committees and of course 9 day fortnights! With the job being related to my degree, I felt that I was able to put what I had learnt into practice very well.
By the end of my internship I did not feel like an intern but very much part of the team. It will be weird not getting up on Monday morning. I took on additional projects which my colleagues needed help with when I could and was able to contribute to discussions.
I was surrounded by process and process safety and so had plenty of support when needed and I could discuss any issues I had with my mentor or supervisor. I had a mid term internship review where I was given some pointers and we looked at what work I had done and what needed doing in an attempt to establish whether it was all achievable.
With four projects, I did not have any moments where I was twiddling my thumbs, but I did not have to stay in the office part 7 and very rarely past 6.
As stated previously, all the work which I was involved in was relevant and will be used, not just an intern project unearthed each year. Definitely felt that I was earning my pay cheque. I ended up doing work not just for my department but supporting other groups within the organisation, being able to branch out and help in other projects was great!
I learnt how to use my technical knowledge more astutely. My personal management of meetings and setting short term achievable goals improved as well. I am much more adept at HYSYS now as well. I expect that the skills I have learnt will be very useful whether I stay in engineering or try something else.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly and somewhat relaxed. People were focussed on their work but occasional conversations about work, sport or something in the news would come up.
Each intern had their own projects with an approximate time scale. Inevitably that time scale went to pieces somewhat, but all in all everything was very clearly laid out. Only issues involved IT with the amount of RAM in my laptop which delayed some work, but I was able to resolve this by taking on another project whilst the issue was resolved.
There were few actual training sessions had as an intern. However we were able to organise some taster sessions for ourselves and the graduate recruitment team did organise one event for us which gave us an impression of the training programme which we would be involved in as a graduate.

As a young graduate, there is plenty of scope to move in the company. With the industry coming out of a dip and with a large shift to gas, there is a lot of activity and so a lot of opportunities to be involved in different projects across the board!
The Culture
There were occasional hang outs, but with the office situated outside of London, people lived all over the place and so it was very tricky logistically to organise any large events. There were some small meet ups but this could definitely have been an area for improvement. Help with accommodation would have helped.
I lived in London and so travel costs were about 50-60£ a week including weekends. Food is subsidised with a free £5 on your card which is very helpful. The costs are whats expected of London, but I still expect to be going back to University with some money in my account with which to enjoy my final year.
Very little existed out in Feltham, most of my socialising was with university friends who were also living in London. As expected, there is plenty to do in London and so there wasn't a dull weekend. I would say that the commute every morning was worth living in the London area.
There were committees in the company to get involved with and organise Sports Days, Balls and pub trips etc. There was some other sport clubs such as touch rugby and ultimate Frisbee which added to this!
