    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed myself. You don't get paid but lets be fair, you are working for a charity, and they more than make up for the lack of money with lots of development opportunities. There were many different workshops available to help improve skills, and everyone is very supportive of personal growth. The company vibe is brilliant as well, really welcoming and supportive. The work you do is also a lot more involved than other internships I've seen. I had my own independent project that I had ownership of, and had to work with many different teams to get things done.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My opinion was always listened to, and especially in cases concerning the younger generation, was given a lot of weight. Obviously there were some areas they know a lot more about, but instead of shutting me down they took the time to explain why my suggestion would be difficult.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Lots of support. My manager was brilliant at creating an environment where I felt that if I voiced an idea it would be listened to. She also gave me plenty of development opportunities and set up meetings with people she thought I might find interesting.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy, I was encouraged to ask for more work and help out the team if my own project had come to a standstill for the day. helping out the team with their tasks was actually some of the most interesting stuff I did on the internship. I answered queries and complaints and got to write a ton of science copy.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Nothing described as "mission critical" but as I went through the internship I was given more tasks that an ordinary team member deals with. My project itself ended up being a pretty big job, and as I was the one leading it was a big responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have developed skills in things I didn't even know were skills. This whole experience has been a real education. I am far better at tailoring information to a target audience, at making a convincing argument, and managing people and their expectations. There were several specific courses on offer, my favourites of which were the CV/Interview skills workshop, and the "writing for the web" workshop.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Lovely atmosphere, very friendly people. One of the standouts of this experience has definitely been the people I have met.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Pretty well organised? All the information I needed was there. However I started later than the other interns and it was a little more difficult for me to find my feet and befriend the other interns. Other than that, it was grand.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot of effort was put in to helping me understand the CRUK brand and how to work well in the team itself.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I really really really want to go on the grad scheme.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Every Thursday the interns met for drinks. Was also opportunities to meet up with the team for clubs like yoga or bouldering.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's London so of course it's a bit expensive. I stayed with family so thankfully didn't have to rent anywhere.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Meeting up with people, and organised trips by people in the office.
