    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was an enjoyable experience. I had the opportunity to work at a terrific company and work with some of the best game developers in the world. The internship was managed very well, which made my experience good. King has so far been the best workplace I've ever had.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues regularly gave me feedback and made sure that I was welcomed into the team. I had the opportunity to work across multiple teams. On every team I felt like I was bringing value to the project. I would say that I felt valued by my coworkers, and that was a positive aspect about the internship.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a buddy/manager [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], who made sure to meet with me once a week. We kept track of my internship goals and he ensured that I got to meet the right people and be on the right projects to reach my goals. He has been there for me 100% of the way. As for other managers and supervisors, I have always felt comfortable reaching out for support. The senior game designer on Farm Heroes Super Saga [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was particularly supportive, checking up on me and offering guidance even when I was on different projects.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some days felt very busy whereas others were less so. Most of the time I had things to do but not too much to get stressed out about the workload. A typical day would include lots of meetings with a couple hours here and there to focus on my work. I feel that I have gotten much better at managing my time since the start of my internship.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Enough responsibility for me to feel comfortable. I was always encouraged to take on extra tasks, like presenting at design meetings which I appreciated. All of my tasks were flexible and that made working on them easier because I did not feel pressured.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This experience has given me skills and experience which will be very useful in the future. I have learned many new technical skills as well as important soft skills. My university degree prepared me for many aspects of the job, but it was not a substitute for quality work experience.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally speaking, the atmosphere at King is very relaxed. A lot of trust is placed in employees, as everyone can come and leave flexibly and work where they want to. People are mostly positive and always friendly and welcoming. It is very easy to befriend co-workers at the game studio.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well organised apart from the last few weeks. It took a very long time to find out what the next steps would be for someone like myself who wanted to work full time. It was an extremely stressful time in my life as I was interviewing at multiple companies, viewing accommodation to rent and not having certainty about my future.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was shown how to use new tools whenever it was necessary. I found the internship breakfast talks a great way to get insight to some of the key roles at the company. I unfortunately missed the presentation skills workshop (with the DISC profile). I can't say that there has been any other training.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After a few weeks of working at King, I felt that it would be the right place for me to work at full time. It's truly a great place particularly for myself as I am still quite young and new to the games industry. There is a lot that I can learn.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The kingterns in London formed a fairly close group. We were all very supportive of one another and there was a true sense of friendship among all of us. It helped that we used facebook and hipchat to organize lunches and meetups together. I will miss my kingtern buddies in London!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Eating out is expensive. Rent is very high. Being able to have healthy breakfast and snacks at King was great. The relocation benefit helped me a lot during my internship. The salary could have been higher to compensate for the high cost of living.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in London is quite good. There is always lots to see and do. There are plenty of great pubs and nightclubs in central London, some of them are not too expensive. I am not much of a party-goer so I cannot really comment much on the nightlife situation in London. Actually I think this is a strange question to put in this survey.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, absolutely! I was new to London, so I obviously wanted to do all the touristy stuff like go to the museums and see sights. I managed to find many interesting activities through Facebook and Meetup.com, as well as some things through friends. It helps to be sociable and interested in finding new things to do.
