    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The day was very diverse with the activities scheduled, and the staff ensured that we felt comfortable throughout. I enjoyed gaining further insight into how the company operates, especially being given a presentation on how the company might approach a new project and the technology it uses during this process. I thought that any technical aspects were pitched at the right level so that they gave detail but were also understandable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt warmly welcomed when I arrived, and the staff were all very friendly and happy to talk about anything. They were interested in our backgrounds so they could we got the most out of the activities and were always keen to answer any questions we had. It felt as though everyone wanted me to get the most out of the day, and that all the staff wanted to be there to help give a better understanding of what it is like to work at BP.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The activities were well balanced between ensuring we felt comfortable and confident in what we were doing, whilst allowing us to be independent and work together with the other scholars. The assessment centre/technical interview activities were very well presented, in a relaxed way where we could discuss things with BP staff that could help us in the future, without being in a high pressure environment.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The day gave me an increased understanding of how a global company operates, as well as a further insight into the gas and oil industry. It gave an insight into the wide variety of skills and knowledge required in a team to operate successfully. Being able to speak to interns/graduates showed me how my degree could fit in to the industry, as well as a more specialised insight into how technology partners with science in developing projects.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The day was very well structured, with a clear timetable planned. However, no part of the day felt too long or too rushed. The day felt relaxed as there were breaks throughout, meaning nothing was too intense. There was a good balance of talks/information given to us, and activities that involved more engagement on our behalf/chance for us to ask questions.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The day felt relaxed, whilst maintaining a professional approach throughout. Everyone seemed happy, and it was good to have a chance to talk to and get to know not only the staff at BP, but also the other scholars. All the activities were well balanced to be interesting and enjoyable, as well as informative.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Where possible, the activities were well tailored to my interests and backgrounds. It was extremely useful to run the assessment centre and technical interview sessions in a way where we could gain experience of how they work in a practical way, whilst doing it in a relaxed environment where it was made clear there was no pressure on how we performed.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The talks from the graduates gave a clear insight into life as a full time employee, both in terms of the work they do, giving specific examples of their roles and responsibilities, but also in the time outside of the working day and how they engage in social activities with other employees. It was inspiring to see how much they enjoyed both the work they do and they time they spend outside of the working day, engaging in company-related activities.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Having such personal access to talk with current staff gave a firm insight into what they enjoy about their job, and the aspects of the company that are most important to them. It was helpful to be able to talk with the graduates who had worked at other companies, to understand how BP and its company culture compared with their previous employment.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The day was very useful in showing me how my degree can directly relate into a job in the industry. It inspired me to engage more with my work, having shown both the opportunities available in the future, and the way all the staff clearly enjoy their work and the atmosphere of the company.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • The company kindly covered travel expenses.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • The day presented opportunities to meet with a range of employees of the company (interns, graduates and more senior staff who worked for different areas of the company), and gave plenty of time to talk to them and learn about what they do. There was also adequate time to talk to the other scholars and network with them. It was good to have the staff and interns present at lunch to talk to in an informal way.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • 4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • There was a good length of time devoted to being able to speak with current interns (over lunch) and recent graduates, through talks about their experiences and opportunities to ask questions. Both groups explained how their engagement with the company went beyond the usual working day, giving specific examples of social events and "extra-curricular" activities they were involved in with other employees and as part of the company.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • The day is perfectly organised. The activities were extremely well varied and all were applicable and relatable to my degree and what I wanted to know about the company. The staff ensured we were comfortable throughout and we were made to feel welcome. Alongside the insight into the company, it was helpful in understanding the application process for graduate and intern roles.
