    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Savills. I was lucky in that I was in rotation between 4 different departments, so I gained experience in 4 different professions which also increased my understanding of the industry as a whole. There was a mix of technical work, intern-specific presentations and social events.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt like a valued member particularly in the Development department, I felt as if the work I was doing really mattered. Understandably there was a limit on the work I could perform as the team members were often months into a project when I joined, and I was only in their team for a week, but I was definitely given interesting and important tasks.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I have no complaints about the guidance I received. I knew that if I was stuck or unsure about anything I could just ask and one of my teammates would take the time out of their work to thoroughly explain it. My mentor was a fantastic help, even though I was rotating to other departments she looked out for me and helped get me settled in to the next team.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I can tell that the knowledge I’ve gained over just the last 4 weeks will be invaluable in my final year of university. I plan on taking some real estate modules to fully take advantage of what I’ve learnt here. I believe the most useful information I received was the databases and websites that I didn’t know existed previously, and the importance of relationships in the surveying industry.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The summer scheme was very well structured. I spent a week in 4 different departments and was given a variety of tasks to do so got a broader idea of what each team did. There were also presentations given by members of the company that we could watch over video call. These were specifically for the interns to increase our understanding of the company and also learn about their experiences and the opportunities available working for Savills.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was good in the office, unfortunately due to the seating plan I spent 2 weeks sitting back to back with members of my team so I couldn’t engage with them as well. However there were numerous social events and lunches with the office that gave an opportunity to network and get to know your co-workers better.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Savills held 8 presentations over the 4 weeks focused on each department and what they did, as well as graduate opportunities and a generl overview of the company. In addition to this, we were taught extensively about the APC and how to apply, what it involved, and co-workers experience completing it. Because I rotated departments there wasn’t much time to develop my skills in a week. However, Savills have a pass rate of 90% in the APC compared to a national average of 50% so I’m sure they must invest in their employees.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • As a graduate, you have to opportunity to rotate between 4 departments over the course of 2 years. I essentially did this on a smaller scale so it gave me a very good idea of the kind of work I’d be doing were I to get a job here. Also I spoke to graduate co-workers that gave me a good insight into their full time roles.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I have a much better understanding of the culture in Savills due to the presentation they gave us on the company. Additionally, my co-workers all told me what it’s like to work at Savills at the social events after work. If I had been here longer I believe I would’ve got an even better idea,

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • This summer scheme has really opened my eyes to the opportunities available within this field. I didn’t realise how many pathways there were to take down the real estate route, and this internship has certainly given me a better idea of what I really enjoy, as well as my strengths and weaknesses. I only wish I could've rotated to more departments.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was paid well for this internship, and even taken out on free lunches and after work drinks on multiple occasions. I was not reimbursed expenses because I didn't have any, but the Graduate Recruitment Manager let us know that if we did have any, we could claim these back before leaving.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes absolutely, especially on the rotation scheme where I met the members of 4 different teams. I got to meet so many important players in Manchester particularly in the Office Agency department. At after work drinks which were usually once a week, co-workers really made the effort to talk to you as an intern.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The networking events were great. We ate lunch at Croma and the Principal Hotel, went to The Vine, Liquorice bar and Albert Schloss, all paid for! Additionally we also went on 2 walking tours around Manchester to learn about Savills operations within the city. A grad day happened to fall within our placement so we got to meet all the new graduates that had recently joined from Savills offices all over the country.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I didn’t find out a lot about the activities outside of work, apart from the Property Triathlon that had taken place the week before we joined. I believe there was a presentation that mentioned out of work activities but I didn’t attend it.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would recommend this scheme to a friend. I learnt much more than I would have at university in that same time period, and I know that this information will be useful not only in the last year of uni, but in my future career as well. I would definitely recommend the rotation scheme, as you get a well rounded view of the company and its individual departments.
