    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work done was wide ranging and varied on a day-to-day basis. The work gave a good sense of what would be expected within a graduate role and gave good exposure to the industry. The work was challenging however the team was very supportive and was more than happy to provide assistance if it was required.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues and this was reflected in the workload and responsibility that they endowed upon me. They were very friendly and welcoming upon the start of my internship and included me in all social activities that were organised throughout the period of my internship. I felt completely at ease within my team and felt I was treated as an equal at all times.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone within the team was exceptionally supportive of me throughout my internship. All members of the team, regardless of how senior, were happy to assist me with my work or any questions I had regardless of how silly they might have seemed. My buddy that I was partnered with throughout was a constant source of guidance and provided constructive feedback on all pieces of work done which was very beneficial.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Overall I was kept fairly busy on a daily basis. At the beginning of my internship the workload was slightly less due to the nature of the work done revolving around the yearly quarters - as my internship began at the start of the third quarter the workload was initially less. As the third quarter progressed however the workload progressively increased until I was kept fairly busy on a day-to-day basis.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The level of responsibility placed upon me definitely increased as my internship progressed. I found myself producing lots of client-produced work towards the end of my internship with minimum input from the rest of the team. I found this to be very rewarding as it gave me a sense of pride knowing the work I had been entrusted with was going to be of great value to the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills and abilities developed I believe revolved mainly around communication. As a lot of the work was computer based (mainly excel and word) I didn't really believe I developed many skills as I believe myself to be already proficient in these areas. However communicating in person, on the phone and over email with colleagues and fund managers is where I believe the core development areas were.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office was very upbeat throughout. - it was very relaxed overall which made settling in to the company very easy. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming which as a newcomer to the business made the process a lot more stress-free. I got along well with all colleagues and found that we had many shared interests.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I believe the internship was very well organised. All details for timings and locations were communicated very clearly in advanced which enabled me to organise way in advance. I felt that the initial residential training days were structured well and were run very smoothly. Overall I found the organisation to be extremely good.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the firm really invested well in me. This began the very first week when all interns were taken to Essex to have three days of socialising, introduction to the business and technical training. From then on throughout the rest of the internship I was offered many opportunities to attend various workshops to develop my soft skills along with opportunities to engage with more senior individuals to learn more about the business.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The prospect of working for Aon Hewitt is exceptionally appealing. I have discovered more about the business and the role I have interned in and have very much enjoyed the experience. I have come to learn that mobility within the business is very easy and often encouraged -enabling a long and varied career path.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The office as a whole was fairly social. There were quite a few opportunities to participate in sport both at lunchtime and after work with my fellow colleagues which I took up on numerous occasions. Alongside this we would often go for drinks after work, socialising outside work hours. I very much enjoyed spending quality time with my colleagues outside work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living and socialising was very reasonable as I was on an internship outside of London. Aon has a social budget and often the social activities were subsidised by this and so many times were free to partake in. Overall I found the internship to be very affordable - the cost is certainly not something to worry about.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife in my area was very good. Being based in a city meant there are endless opportunities to go out and enjoy yourself on an evening. Regularly we would go out to pubs/bars after work for drinks and on one occasion even ended going on a full night out with my buddy!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of offers to play sport with my fellow colleagues outside of work - mainly football and cricket which I partook in on numerous occasions. It was nice to involve myself with my colleagues outside the workplace and get to know them more on a personal level. This made settling into the team very easy.
