    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The initial training is really useful and builds your confidence straight away. The office environment was great and eveyone was really friendly. I really enjoyed the CSR project and the presentation day in London was really enjoyable and well organised. The only negative is that because the internship is in the summer, the office is very quiet. This means there isnt much work to be done and so some days you may be twiddling your tumbs for a bit.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the collegues were very friendly, even more senior colleagues would stop and have a chat with you. We were regularly invited to social events which were great fun and made us feel involved. My manager would regularly check in with me to see how I was doing. Other collegues would also be willing to answer questions all the time. They would often set asside half an hour to go through an aspect of the business with you.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a couple meetings with my manager to catch up and see how I was getting on. If I had any questions or wanted to know more about a certain area she would set up meetings for me so I could talk to the right people. You also get given a buddy who is usually someone on the graduate programe- they are there to answer any concerns or questions you have. You can also sue the graduate indox to ask any more admin questions about your payslip or any other details. The graduates team also hold regular lunch and learns which are a chance to learn more about the business.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied- some days I would have a lot to do and others I would be going around asking for work and no one had anything to give me. The CSR project helps because if you go have days with nothing to do you can always spend time working on that. My managers also gave me a mini project to work on some power point slides for work experienece students- this was also soemthing I could just work on when I wasnt very busy with clinet wok.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • We we're given a lot of responsibility early on which was great. Having the responsibility doesnt feel scary though becuase people are always on hand to ask questions. Also the work you do is always checked over so many times that you dont need to worry to much if you make a mistake. When I did lient work for my buddy he would always check over it and give me feedback- this just made more more confident that I would do the work even better the next time around.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think the CSR project greatly developed my project mnagement and team wrok skills. Havin to do the presentation at the end also helpped get over some fears of presenting. You have soft skills taining in the induction which I actually found really useful. Thing like knowing how to write a business email or conduct yourself in the workplace are actually really useful. We also got a lot of project management training which I think will be useful for my projects at university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office uses agile working which means you can sit at whatever desk you want each day. This makes for a really friendly office as you will end up sitting next to someone different each day. Its generally quite quiet in the office but there are always collegues having a chat in the kitchen. There were also regular fundraing events, some of which we're quite competitive whcih were fun. Fridays are generally very relaxed- they are casual fridays so you dont have to wear office attire. Many collegues leave early on a friday and head to the pub.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think it was very well organised. Were were given lots of information in the lead up to the onternship about travel and expenses for the training. You have to set up objectives at the start of the internship and these are monitored my your manager so you can see how much you have progressed. The final presentation in week 8 gets all the interns back together and sort of concludes the internship. Then in the final week you get feedback from you manager and are given lots of information about next steps- this means you can really see your progress thoughout.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had one day of soft skills training, then a day of training about Aon and an introduction to the CSR project and then a day of technical training. The whole 3 days were were well organised and included organised social events for you to network with other intern and collegues higher up in the business. They also put a lot of effort into the CSR project whcih allows you to develop your project management and team work skills.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Youre given a lot of information about the graduate program thoughout the internship to help you decide if its right for you. I think arounf 80% of those that do the internship get a poffer for a job on the grad programe to the opportunity is deffiently there! If you do get on the program Aon pay for you to get all your professional qualifications which is a big bonus. Getting qualified is really important for career progression in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • In my office there are 3 summer interns and 2 industrial placements. We all got on really well and met for lunch almost every day. We also met up for drinks after work each friday. There was defiently a good social scence, however from the sounds o it the Birmigham office is quieter than the London office- they seem to go out a couple of times a week after work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was about what you would expect. I lived in leamigton spa during my internship as I had a house there for uni so my living costs werent too bad. I think some of the IP's that had moved to the centre of birmigham were paying quite a lot. I brought my own lunch in each day so I didnt buy food much at work. There are plenty of small supermarks arounf the office so its easy to get a cheap meal deal if you need it.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As it was in the centre of Birmigham the night life was great. There were lost of nice cars around and we regualry went to the pub after work. We didnt rally go out clubbing in Birhigham althouh there are plently of places you can go. We did this more in London during the training and presentations days when all of the interns were toegther.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes loads! There are lots of sports activites. There is yoga in the office on a friday evening. There are football and netball team. There went to compete with other offices in manchester for a weekend which was great fun. There is also a running team and a group that went to play badminton reguarly at the sports centre. While I was there there were also charity events that you ould get involved with.
