    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • 1. I personally would say I really enjoyed my internship at Aon especially around the flexibility of the working environment in terms of team work and that you’re not left in isolation. 2. This internship has also been very interactive rather than task focus. As an intern at Aon I was given the opportunity to attend regular client meetings, contributing to weekly staff meetings, making my opinions feel valuable to each colleague. 3. Due to the nature of the industry, its complexity of understanding policies, procedures and jargon was easily understandable through consistent training given throughout the internship but also enabled me to increase my horizon in terms of the insurance industry and develop my transferable skills such as collaboration, networking and confidence. 4. At the start of the internship, all interns are required to set smart objectives which are constantly developed during the duration of the internship. One of my smart objectives was “Deliver a 10 minute presentation on the subject of Crime (coverage and bench-marking) at the UK/US team meeting on 21st August 2017.” I can honestly say I have improved my presentation skills through delivering a presentation in front of 15 senior members including receiving invaluable feedback which I will now use to improve for my next opportunity. 5. I really liked the idea of “lunch and learn” which is an activity carried out every Wednesday to learn about different areas of Aon which can increase your awareness of the operation of the company. 6. I have also attended many social events at Aon and networked with many senior individuals who have introduced me to different areas of the business that I may progress my career into. 7. I really like the fact that Aon provides further details of the graduate scheme and what it offers and where it can lead you within Aon, helping a university student to gain a sense of direction of what career to pursue. 8. As an intern at Aon, we are put into teams from the very beginning of the internship to work on a CSR project and leaving a lasting legacy with UK Charities. My Team and I delivered a lasting legacy to Dementia UK and have built strong relationships from representatives from Dementia UK and will be volunteering for the charity outside Aon. 9. I was also given the opportunity to research into a client’s risk profile and report to senior members of the ARS team. This gave me the opportunity to shows my capabilities and my work being recognized as quality. 10. At Aon interns are not treated as interns they are rather treated as a member of the team, which makes one feel belonging to the company.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • 1. I honestly can say colleagues that I have met during my internship have made me feel like at home. 2. Over the 9 weeks the relationship has become very strong, through attending social events, socializing outside of work. 3. Colleagues at Aon also valued my work and provided constructive feedback in order for me to improve my next assignment. 4. I can honestly say colleagues at Aon want to see you constantly progress and they are there to support you to achieve what you as an intern want to achieve. 5. The work that interns produce is treated as important which makes an intern feel more valued. 6. Colleagues also spend time with interns such as regular lunch together. 7. Colleagues also provide regular update meetings in terms of progression and really listen to what interns would like to experience while they are at Aon.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • 1. My mentor and my manager have given my regular support and guidance throughout the internship and have enabled me to achieve my smart objectives. 2. As an intern I was constantly seeking feedback for the work I produced or contributed to in order to improve. I was able to receive constructive feedback from both my mentor and my manager which contributed towards my development. 3. I also raise questions regarding areas I did not understand or a task that was not as clear and receive prompt explanation either from my mentor or manager.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • 1. Personally, I was busy in most days whereas other days I was not busy as much as I had hoped. However, I took the time to research into methodologies of Aon and constructed questions to ask my manager. 2. I also took the initiative to research into a client’s risk profile and constructed a report which complemented my presentation on a client.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • 1. The responsibility that I was given during my internship varied between days to day. Some days I was given full responsibility for completing a task whereas other days I was given less responsibility. 2. For example, I was given the responsibility to calculate weighting percentages for different investment instrument for different clients under a specific deadline. 3. I was also given the responsibility to calculate the weighting percentages for different investment instruments in a defined benefit pension scheme of companies who are not clients of Aon.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • 1. At the start of the internship, all interns are required to set smart objectives which are constantly developed during the duration of the internship. One of my smart objectives was “Deliver a 10 minute presentation on the subject of Crime (coverage and benchmarking) at the UK/US team meeting on 21st August 2017.” I can honestly say I have improved my presentational skill through delivering a presentation in front of 15 senior members including receiving invaluable feedback which I will now use to improve for my next opportunity. 2. This skill will help me not only in my degree but also in my personal life. Becoming more confident as an individual and being vigilant of my body language. 3. I have also developed my networking skills and multitasking skills which were areas of weakness when I first started this internship. These skills will help me in my final year at university to multitask assignments while revising for final year examinations.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere at Aon office was very interactive, a happy atmosphere. Some days were intense and less interactive with each other as deadline was approaching. But ultimately, it is exciting working environment especially in the London office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very organised from the start, a clear structure plan of every intern working on a CSR project, predetermined teams in order to make every intern network with each other. Aon also organised a lunch and learn session taking place at lunch time to increase awareness of the operations of Aon and different weekly topics to discuss.

  • Aon provide graduate schemes which invests into qualifications such as CFA and Actuarial, they also provide study support and holidays balance work/lifestyle which is used for revision. Aon also provide fund for different qualification however, a proposal needs to be made and presented in order to evaluate whether the qualification is relevant to the role.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • In my view, the future employment prospects within Aon is very appealing considering the ability to promote to a higher position, the qualifications that they fund and provide, the working life style in terms of one day a week, you can work from home and other social activities taking place outside of work such as every Thursdays playing cricket.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Honestly, yes. Both colleagues and interns mixed very well with each other and attended social events outside work hours including myself. There is also a table tennis activity taking place everyday after work which colleagues and intern often took part in.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost living is irrelevant as I was living at home. In terms of socializing going to bars and club is reflectively expensive from door entry to drinks.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in London is very exciting with previous experience. However, I did not club during the duration of the internship as transportation is a trouble the next morning.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • As previously mentioned, there are numerous activities being carried out throughout the day such as table tennis, every Thursday cricket matches, some teams play football in Hyde Park, attending social events to a local bar/pub.
