    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I felt the internship was more rewarding than enjoyable. That may have been partly down to me having very high expectations of the work I wanted to produce. I acknowledge that I sometimes expect too much from myself, so a good learning experience for me will be to relax and try to enjoy work.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by them. The nature of my project was to reduce their workload, so it was natural for them to support the work I was doing. Everyone was eager to help me and wanted me to succeed, so it was a good experience from that point of view

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers were not likely to give feedback on my work or directly praise me, but that may also be because I am quite an independent person and I seek guidance over support. I don't feel like I need emotional support at work. In terms of guidance, they were very good. That suits my working style, though some other personality types might have struggled here.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy. My project was completely end to end and I began from scratch myself. It was a good learning experience to deal with a large workload as it will prepare me for other jobs in the future. I am happy to sacrifice this at the expense of being bored or relaxed at work

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I was given a large amount of responsibility and often thrown in at the deep end. This was tough at first but I gradually became more comfortable. Pushing myself is something I wanted to get out of the internship and this definitely happened. This feeds into my earlier point about the management being more interested in guidance: It allowed me to make this my project

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have leant more than I ever expected over these two months. I have learned that it is ok to reach out to people and ask them for advice, without feeling like you are encroaching on their time. I have also learned how to manage my time effectively between different stakeholders and where to focus my energy. My biggest learning, though, has been that I need to come out of myself more and connect with people better. If I can do that, then I think I can have a very successful career here.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was very relaxed and not stuffy at all.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The events were organised well , but I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to know the management very well. It was hard to get time with them, which may have been down to a variety of reasons. For the future, I would recommend that the management set up more time to get to know the interns.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • This is AMEX's strong point and I think there are many opportunities here for self development

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    Travel loan

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am interested in doing the graduate scheme as I want to learn more about the company. I can see myself pushing my limits even more in the full scheme

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely with the other interns and also the grads at 1JS. Although amongst the operations interns there was a clash of personalities among a few. This wasn't a big issue for me as it is unrealistic to expect 7 randomly picked people to become best friends, though sometimes it would have been nicer had we all been friends.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • No suprises

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Brighton is a student town so no surprises

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there are clubs and activities at amex

    4/5
