    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I found this internship to be a useful insight into the work that Aon does - I worked with a variety of different people on a variety of different pieces of work. Naturally, not every moment was filled with excitement, but overall it was an enjoyable experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • During the first couple of weeks, as is to be expected, my work was not of particular importance, but as the weeks progressed, I felt that my work was valued by my colleagues and that what I was doing was useful. Whereas at the beginning of the internship, it felt as if I was bothering my colleagues by asking them for work, by the end they were asking me if I had the time to do work for them.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I as given a good amount of support by my manager, who arranged fortnightly catch-up sessions, where I could discuss any problems and issues and my manager checked that I was on track to achieve my objectives. This culminated in a final feedback session in my last week, which was a more comprehensive review of my internship and offered me advice on how to improve.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My level of business varied. On some days, at the start of the internship, particularly when my manager was out of the office, I was left with little work to do. However, this changed as the internship progressed and by the end of it, I found myself very busy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As is to be expected, all of my work was checked by my supervisors before it was sent out to clients, but I did spend time talking to insurers and liaising with them - this is when I was given most responsibility and as I gained more experience, the more responsibility I was given,

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I doubt that there will be any specific skills that helped with my degree studies - doing a degree in history is not really related to the work I have done on this internship. However, I do think that the skills I have learnt will be useful in my future career - I have improved my confidence in speaking to colleagues and clients, both face-to-face and over the phone and have improved my organisational ability regarding being given various different tasks to do. I have also gained a wider knowledge of the insurance indsutry, which will obviously be very useful should I go onto a career in insurance.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office was friendly and welcoming - people were polite and outgoing and happy to introduce themselves to me. However, there was not much of a social atmosphere in the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised - the interns were all trained together, with accomodation and travel for the training days covered and I was then partnered up with a 'buddy' in each team that I was working with. From the beginning, I knew how much time I would be spending with each time, although Aon were flexible with regards to this, so that I could gain the best possible experience. The weekly 'Lunch & Learn' sessions provided a useful time for Aon to update the interns on anything necessary.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I did a large amount of online training, but the most important and useful training was done on the job. It felt as if Aon invested a significant amount in this on the job training as I was taken along to client meetings and I was, by and large, given a good amount of feedback on any work that I did so that I could identify any areas for improvement.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They are quite appealing - as the company is a global one, there is significant scope for moving between different departments within the business, which means that you will not be tied down to one job. There is also a wide range of locations available to work at, which would mean that I would be able to work somewhere that suits me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • In the office I was in, there was only 3 interns, and so there was not much of a social scene for the bulk of the internship. As most of my colleagues were at the stage of starting families, there will little socialising with them either. However, there were a couple of social events which all internes attended - at the training at the start of the internship and at a CSR project presentation day at the end of the internship. From discussing the social scene with other colleagues, it appears that it is most vibrant in London, and not particularly active in other offices.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I worked in an area near to my house so I did not have to pay rent. Socialising costs were reasonable for the south-east of England - expensive, but not more than you would expect.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was very little nightlife in the town where my office was located. There are a few clubs nearby, but it is nothing special.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few opportunities to get involved in outside-of-work activities, such as 5-a-side football and the occasional pub quiz. However, due to the demographic of the office (many had families), there was not a great deal of activity outside of work.
