The Role
Fitted into a Scrum team quickly and started picking up work. Senior Engineers are open to listen to your suggestions on processes, as well as any engineering problems!
Placements leaders are 10/10. Great fun and more than willing to facilitate meetings with people from all around the business if you are curious.
Sometimes busy, sometimes not - lot of external factors impacting progress in some instances, just part of the environment. But its always easy to walk over to the other interns and see if you can help them out.
As much as you wanted. Given control of a full new project, and control over overhauling a legacy code base as well.
Interesting insights in business as a general - as well as how tech is run in large businesses (and the benefits/drawbacks of this) Continued improvement of SE skills - as well as sharing some skills with other engineers.
The Company
Everyone was very helpful, there was no label of being an intern if anything people were more interested in your point of view. In team meetings, I was more than able to discuss problems with senior engineers and offer solutions to problems that other member of the team have been having.
The tech recruitment team are amazing. Always available to help out and organise extra meeting and make introductions to people when you ask. All the social event were great fun.
The company set up multiple workshops, exposing us to new technology to help and grow our knowledge of emerging tech (blockchain, quantum computing, machine learning, neural networks) by inviting external companies to come in and speak about that, or asking current employees to give up an hour or two of their time to come and speak with us. There was also improvisation, leadership, career, and personal growth sessions ran to guide us in our personal and career development.

The programme is set up so that on the last day of the placement you are told the companies decision to either extend an offer to the graduate programme for when you graduate unconditionally, put on a 'waiting list' where they will go through their recruitment season and potentially offer you a place if they do not find a more suitable person, or not to extend an offer at all. I'm happy to say that I received an offer to come back once I graduate!
The Culture
All the interns would meet up usually daily for coffee/breakfast in the morning and lunch unless we were busy doing something else or having lunch with our teams. Apart from that we went to the pub, had dinner, and went out together regularly!
Brighton is pretty expensive - comparable to any big city really. Depending on how close to the city centre you live the rent goes up obviously. You can find well-priced pubs and restaurants all around the city though - try them all out.
Brighton is really fun to go out in - there's plenty of bars/pubs/clubs to go to, and people are really nice, also clubs are open pretty late, some til 6am. There's also plenty of takeaways open for after!
There's as many opportunities as you want there to be. Brighton is on the sea side and there's all sorts of stuff to do - kayaking, paddle boarding etc.. You can also go on hikes, go bouldering, climbing!
