    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • From this internship I gained valuable experience within the Claims and Client services team. This experience enabled me to see how claims processing takes place, as I was able to shadow claims advocates who worked within Aon Benfield. I enjoyed this experience as I felt welcomed within the team and integrated really well in the working environment.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that my colleagues valued me a lot, I was assigned a major project which was to look at the future of claims and this involved intensive research using primary and secondary data I conducted interviews and was the able to draw conclusions – when I fed back my findings I could see how the colleagues valued my opinions and said they would take all my points on board looking forward.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a Line Manager and a buddy when I started the internship. From the first day of my internship till my last I had constant support from both. They made sure that I was enjoying the internship as well as gaining valuable experience. I had regular reviews with my line manager to set targets/ objectives which were beneficial as it gave me a benchmark that I had to reach.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On a daily basis, I was fairly busy – but some days would be busier than others purely due to the nature of the tasks set and the time frame given. When I was working on a strategic project I was really busy as I was managing my time effectively setting gaols for myself, as oppose to when I was shadowing colleagues.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In terms of responsibility, I was given the right amount to enable me to conduct the strategic project effectively but with the right amount to make sure that I was going overboard and still had discipline. I felt that my Line Manager treated me as a responsible adult and gave me the right space to work effectively without too much control

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My analytical skills have definitely been developed seeing as I was using data at many times to draw conclusions and draw upon key points – being able to work under time frame also improved my time management and organisational skills which are important skills that will benefit me in the long term.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was very calm and tranquil, we had a hot desking open plan layout which did mean that in the mornings we had to make sure we were in good to secure a desk. In terms of throughout the day, people would be in and out of the office to see clients but in general it was a great atmosphere to work in.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship programme was organised very well. All the interns had to get involved in a CSR project which raised the morale between the interns and also kept us connected. In terms on within my team, my line manager had a great plan out of work that she wanted me to do and get involved in from the start so it was very well managed.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Not that much, but that’s because we were just interns and I wasn’t really expecting that. I was given the opportunity too present some presentations in front of large crowds which did boost my confidence and enabled me to shine so I guess that could be noted as a positive.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Within the claims team, I can see tis an evolving value adding team within the insurance industry so I know that there will be great opportunity to thrive within this area and grow as a personal improving my interpersonal skills. There’s also the opportunity to be very client facing which is good for building character and gaining valuable skills.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Its insurance, there’s always socials – luckily as interns we were brought along to quite a few socials, dinners, client meetings etc. which gave us some good insight into insurance from many perspectives and also gave us a detailed look within claims the team we were placed in.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I worked in Liverpool St, I commuted from home which was about a 30min train journey costing my about £160 every month which wasn’t too bad. There were many local bars around the work place which were reasonably priced. In terms of eating out – we had a good canteen area in the company which served hot and cold food every day – and a subsidised costa.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Seeing as I was commuting from home I didn’t really get involved in nightlife near the work place, unless it was going out for few work drinks with my colleagues after work which was good as so many bars were local and accessible. On whole I enjoyed that side of things.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, because of our involvement in Corporate Social responsibility project where we were fundraising for chosen charity there was a lot of opportunity to get involved in fundraising activities which were done in the office and outside. I also got involved in the charity fundraisers that the other interns put together, which raged from a treasure hunt around London – to attending a cocktail making session. On whole it was enjoyable.
