    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship at JPM, each week I had different tasks to complete and had opportunities to meet people from different lines if the business. I was given meaningful tasks enabling me to learn and understand how my desk operated and interacted with the business as a whole.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From the beginning I have felt very welcomed into JPM and into the desk. Many of my colleagues took the time to demonstrate and provide an insight into their line of work/day to day duties also. If there was an opportunities for me to get involved they would encourage it. Both in the office and after work interns were encourage to join and be a part of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Continuous support was provided by management on all levels. Regular 1 -1’s, catch up sessions, coffee breaks were common and allowed time to review work done and the next steps also. Not only work related support but further career guidance and motivation was provided within the team which has been very beneficial to my development over the 10 weeks.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the start of the internship I was quite busy learning to use the databases and internal systems. Once my objectives were set most of my time revolved around collecting information and using excel to analyse the data. The day was as busy as you made it. It was a 9 – 5 working hours role.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From the start I was given a lot of responsibility due to my objectives set. Even small tasks to execute were important to the desk. It was good to be given opportunities to add value and to interact with other lines of business also. Towards the end of the internship not as much responsibility was handed over due only having a short period remaining at the firm.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My excel skills have improved significantly since starting this internship. Being able to navigate around excel is key for most finance rolls, I believe I will take the skills and knowledge learnt to many other role in my career. My interpersonal skills have also developed due to being in environment to network with other interns and senior members of the firm. Plus day to day work included communicating with other employee’s via emails/phone which also help shape the language you use.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was generally quiet and had a very relaxed atmosphere. There was a lack of junior staff overall but my colleagues were still very friendly and keen to get to know the new interns joining. I was based in a smaller office where the majority of people left before 6pm.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The 10 weeks were structured quite well by HR and regular reminders and information each week was emailed to all interns. The internship could have been improved by adding in a rotation on the desks or more structured work shadowing sessions. On my desk my manager was well organised in what they wanted me to achieve and by when, to ensure I had made the most of my 10 weeks.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot of personal development was driven by myself in finding a mentor and from having 1-1’s with my manager to allow them to know what I hoped to achieve in the internship but after also. For my division there was no structured training at all which I would of liked such as all the software’s/platforms the company uses. This was only for certain divisions.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future prospect at JPM are very appealing, there is an opportunity for mobility within the internship when being considered for a grad role. Also many of the staff I have met have changed roles multiple time and also regions. There are many potential roles at JPM I would like to explore and learn about. The rotational grad scheme is very appealing as I am keen to explore the firm and are still unsure which path within the bank to take.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The HR organised intern social events were brilliant, food, drink and music was provided at different locations across London. However the office socials were scares, I was tasked to set up a social event for the team which was pretty successful. There was also a volunteering project enabling interns from different division to interact also which was good.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in London is expensive. I lived in a Stratford student accommodation which was reasonably priced for London and then linked my railcard to my oyster to get cheaper fares. But as you tend to travel to and from work at peak times the cost is higher. After work drinks can be pretty expensive depending where you go.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • From working in the City office the streets are usually filled with people drinking on a Thursday and Friday night and Shoreditch was not far away. There is a variety of places to go out in London depending on your taste of music, however there is not many clubs around Canary Wharf that I would recommend.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Outside of work the main opportunity to interact with the other interns was through social event you had set up between yourselves from the friends that you made. Apart from that there was volunteering scheduled which allowed all interns to integrate for a day when helping the local communities across London. There was also the corporate challenge at the beginning of the internship to participate in.
