    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed it a lot, met a lot of interesting people, got a good grasp of the industry and what qualities are appreciated to progress the career ladder. Everyone is really supportive and friendly and offers great advice. The buddy system in place is really helpful in making the placement enjoyable because if there's ever any questions or advice about the smallest of things such as how to sign off an email they're so genuinely helpful. The people in the actuarial division of Aon are really welcoming so the atmosphere is good. The hot desk system is great because you meet a range of people and it's easy and effortless to meet people.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Valued, people made an effort to get to know me and invite the interns to friday after work drinks.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Consistent meetings with manager to evaluate performance. Buddy system is invaluable-always having someone to ask questions to without judgement was a relief as it made asking 'silly questions' easy. However, everyone was happy to provide insight.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Variable. Some days lacking work, others very full. Sometimes would have to email around to annouce that I had spare capacity, found messaging people directly more successful in finding work. The buddy system in place though helped since your buddy would provide you with work initially and explain it, but other people would also get involved in the development of the interns.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Fair amount of responsibility - they gave me a range of work but you have to do a lot of the basic work in order to progress since actuarial work is very technical. Doing transfer values which become tedious is necessary in order to do work that is more difficult and requires more responsibility

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Definitely time management, listening, being proactive. Being part of a work environment will be very useful later in life because I'll understand the etiquette and what actions are effective. Additionally, the skill of trying to work out what I'm trying to achieve, and how best to do it is something I've learned.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was very positive. Definitely not the type of office where people are stressed and over worked. The one work at home day, and study day for those studying for the actuarial exams relieves stress. One of the best things about Aon is the atmosphere, it is engaging, and relaxed but with everyone working hard together to achieve client excellence.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is set up well. All the interns had 3 days of initial training in Chelmsford which included sessions on how to make an impact, how to pitch, what an actuary/investment consultant does etc. with great social events in the evenings. It was a fantastic way to meet fellow interns and network with them beyond those in your department and area. Additionally, the buddy and line manager system was invaluable. We had lunch and learn's every Wednesday lunch as well which taught us about different parts of Aon and provided us with great commercial awareness. We had 2 Q&A sessions which allowed us to have informal chats with senior people around the business. Finally, the CSR project that all interns are involved in, was very well planned - with a project sponsor, and charity partner that we worked with to achieve a brief and get to use our client facing skills.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a lot of personal training and development. During the course of the internship, in addition to the training mentioned above, we had regular training sessions with different members of staff. These included training on Carpe Diem, quality standards, financial assumptions, longevity assumptions, transfer values, GMP etc. This provided a great foundation to our work as it allowed us to not only understand how to do a certain job, but the logic behind the work itself.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - I will find out after my internship whether I get the job. It is to my understanding, that as long as I hit the benchmark I will be offered it.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely, after work drinks with colleagues, social events such as pub quizzes and pub crawls as well. Also great social scene amongst the interns. We all got along very well.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very high since I intern in London. Drinks are extortionate, so is admission to certain clubs. But Spoons and clever picking of clubs can alleviate some of these pains.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Great, always a range of options in London

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Many - summer social, pub quizzes, pub crawls, rounders in the park, after work drinks.

    4/5
