    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I had a positive experience during my internship with Atos. I worked with friendly and helpful colleagues who were always willing to offer support and guidance if required. However, unfortunately there seemed to be a little lacking regarding structure, and consequentially I didn’t receive the rotation opportunities that I would have liked.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout my placement I felt like I was highly valued by my colleagues, and never treated like ‘just an intern’. I was involved in weekly team calls where my feedback and concerns were taken seriously, and where applicable taken to senior management. This ensured that I felt like a respected team member.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I worked in a small but friendly team who were always prepared to give me support and guidance if I reached out for it. However much of my work was conducted remotely, in a different location to my team, and thus I feel like I didn’t receive the most immediate support and had to seek it if required.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of the work I was undertaking on my placement, my workload varied depending on external factors. Thus, I found myself constantly my entire work day on some days, and others with little to do. The busiest periods often came towards the quarter and half ends, due to the pressures of the business.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility during my placement year. I was trusted to pick up tasks myself and ensure they were completed to the satisfactory level. I was also trusted to work remotely from much of my team and manager, meaning I didn’t have a direct supervision but was still able to complete my work load.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I believe that the business skills I developed will greatly help my career path. I had to be able to work timely and in some cases, multitask to meet all my objectives. However, disappointingly I wasn’t offered too much in the way of formal training and this would have been something I would have greatly appreciated.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a very friendly atmosphere in the office, with many of my colleagues being easy to approach and talk to. There was a small community of grads and interns based at my location, and we would regularly meet up for lunch and occasionally arrange to go for dinner and drinks outside of work

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I felt like there was a little lack of structure throughout internship. Initially I wasn’t given any significant work to do as it seemed my unit was a little unprepared to give me work. Once I was placed in a team I was unable to rotate as much as desired because my team was small, and leaving would create a gap.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In the beginning of my internship I attended a 3-day workshop along with other interns, and could develop my knowledge of Atos and my personality type further. This was useful to understand where best I could apply my skills in my team. There was also a vast array of personal training courses and information I could access for free through Atos’ internal training tools.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be interested in returning to Atos, as it is a good company to work for and enables a flexible lifestyle due to the ‘work from home’ mentality. I currently have an offer to return to my current role as a part of the graduate scheme, but would also like to explore what other options I have available before making a final decision.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene amongst fellow graduates and interns. We would meet up for lunch every day and often catch up during work. Occasionally we organised out of work events such as dinner or bowling. These would all contribute to a positive atmosphere in the office and amongst the grad/intern community.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived and worked in Reading, about an hour outside central London. Consequentially prices in the area were fairly expensive, around £4 a pint and £25-30 for dinner. I was able to find very reasonably priced accommodation but from speaking to colleagues the average price was between £550-650 a month.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was a limited nightlife in Reading, with only a few major bars and clubs, the ones that were there were quite expensive compared to the service you received. However, they were all located centrally in the city, so could be easily navigated between. Trains to London ran till about 11pm, so it was possible to spend an evening in London before returning by train.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of extra-curricular activities being run within Atos, including opportunities to be involved with the charity ‘Million Makers’ or to be a STEMNET ambassador. One activity I was actively involved with was the campus recruitment events, these were a lot of fun as myself and a team of grads had to budget, plan and run events on campus to drive interest in Atos. This was a lot of responsibly, as we were fully independent and had to ensure we ran a successful and professional event.
