    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My experience during my internship was excellent. The internship began with an induction event in Birmingham, which allowed me to meet all the new interns who were starting their internships at Deloitte's regional offices. Throughout my 6 weeks I was given multiple opportunities to work with various clients, travel nationwide, perform a wide variety of tasks, whilst becoming part of the Risk Advisory team for the duration of the internship. My work also allowed me to interact with many Deloitte colleagues throughout many of the regional offices, giving me the best insight into what full-time employment with the firm would be like.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was very quickly made to feel part of the time with every member of the team being very friendly and helpful. Everyone was willing to answer any questions I had and would frequently ask if I was doing okay, or needed any help. The friendly atmosphere in the office made it enjoyable to go into work every morning.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The overall support given by my managers and supervisors was excellent. Before the placement began, I was informed that I would have a Buddy and a Champion throughout the Vacation Scheme, who both introduced themselves by email before my placement began and both were in contact with me on my first day in the office. My buddy was able to give me tips on how to do well with the firm, whilst my Champion monitored the majority of my work and was always looking for potential client visits, and extra tasks for me to do. Everyone who I worked with during my placement provided me with feedback, which was very helpful for my Final Interview at the end of the placement, as I was able to talk to my interviewer about the tasks I had worked on and they were able to see how I had performed from my feedback forms. The manager of my department was also very helpful, as he would frequently offer me work and would always make time to discuss the firm in general and how tasks were assigned to each member of the team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The first couple of weeks were not so busy, as I was tasked with completing tutorials and induction tasks in my first week, whilst being provided with small tasks on my second week, however, this was mainly due to it being a quiet time of year for my department. However, from the third week onward, I was much busier with my Champion and Manager able to provide me client desktop work to complete, client site visits, report writing for office meetings, and presentations to prepare for meetings with office staff and clients.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As the internship progressed I was given greater responsibilities including writing reports for upcoming office meetings, working directly on client tasks within the office and using my knowledge of the work to sit in and contribute in client meetings, I was also able to join some of my colleagues in client site visits and shadow the work of the firm's robotics department near the end of my placement. During my client visits I was given the opportunity to perform some testing with the client and sit in on meetings during the visit.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed numerous skills including improving my excel skills, as the firm uses a lot of excel spreadsheets in their tasks. I also gained insights into the regulations within the accounting field to accompany the knowledge I had gained at university. Both will help me greatly in my final year of university, as I will use both in developing my dissertation throughout the year, with my excel skills allowing me to analyse data for my dissertation and my increased knowledge of the field allowing me to provide greater insight of the regulations in my dissertation

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office was very friendly and helpful towards me and the other interns who started with me. Every member of my department went out of their way to introduce themselves and to ask how I was getting on and how I was finding the work I had been given. Every member of staff offered to help me whenever I was unsure about any of my tasks and myself and other interns were invited along to any social events the department was having at the time.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall the placement was well organised with a 2 day induction event in Birmingham for all the new regional office interns. The event outlined that we were required to get feedback on each task that we worked on and that these forms would be used, along with the results of our final interview, in deciding whether each intern would be accepted for a graduate position. Each of my feedback forms were to be sent to my Champion, which we were also told during the induction event. I received induction training during my first day in the Glasgow office, whilst I was told which projects I would be working on throughout the placement, the following day. I was told the date, time, location, and presentation subject of my final interview 2 weeks in advance, which gave me plenty of time to prepare material for the presentation.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invested greatly in me throughout the placement, as during much of the first week I was given induction training and e-learnings to complete, which increased my both my IT and accounting field knowledge and skills. My opportunities to work with clients also allowed me to learn from the placement as I was able to see to practical side to audit testing that I had learned at university, which increased my overall understanding of auditing.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects are excellent and I was able to secure a graduate offer within the Risk Advisory Department, which I gladly accepted. The graduate role allows me to work towards by Chartered Accountant qualification with ICAS, which is fully supported by Deloitte, with many of my colleagues informing me of how valuable the qualification is.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was overall good, with all the new interns being given a chance to socialise during dinner and drinks at the induction event. My first day in the office also involved a restaurant lunch with all the new interns at the Glasgow and Edinburgh offices again allowing us to interact, whilst allowing us to meet and talk to some of our buddies, champions, and new colleagues. On my last day, myself and the other Risk Advisory Interns were invited to a department gathering at the end of the day with pizza and drinks.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I travelled from home during the placement, I'm not 100% certain of the cost of living, however, I believe it is reasonably priced, and possibly cheaper than Edinburgh. In terms of socialising, the office is situated right in the centre of Glasgow, between George Square and Merchant City, so there are many bars, clubs, and restaurants within a few minutes walk from the office.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As the office is in the heart of Glasgow, the nightlife is excellent, with 3 universities nearby, the costs in most bars are essentially affordable for students and there is wide variety of choice in terms of bars and clubs.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • During my first week, myself and the other Risk Advisory interns were invited to a department social event in Edinburgh, whilst I we were frequently invited to lunch events throughout the placement, and events after work.
